24/25 Calgary Flames Roster and Line Combination Discussion Thread

Thought it might make sense to start an ongoing thread to discuss the Flames Roster Decisions and Line Combinations - because I think the discussion is happening across multiple threads right now, and it might be better to have a general thread for our random thoughts of what the line combinations should be and who should be sent down throughout the season.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll start with my thoughts, I think right now the Flames need to inject the youth again.

Move out Hanley, and one of Rooney/Kirkland. (Trade or Waivers)

Send down Honzek to get some playing time in the AHL.

Call up Coronato and Pelletier. Get Bean back in the lineup.

 Zary - Kadri - Pospisil
 Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
 Huberdeau - Sharangovich - Kuzmenko
 Lomberg - Rooney/Kirkland - Mantha
 Klapka

 Bahl - Andersson
 Weegar - Miromanov
 Bean - Pachal
 Barrie

 Wolf
 Vladar

And I think Miromanov experiment might only get 15-20 more games before I'd consider looking at one of the younger guys from the farm to come up.

They should only call up Pelletier after they trade Kuzmenko and Mantha. He needs an extended run of playing time where they can figure out if he is a fit on the team long term.

I see that.

But I also think it might be useful to give him a look within the 30 days that he's not waiver eligible. Especially if he sticks near the top of the AHL scoring race.

With that though isn't the rule that he's not eligible for waivers unless he's played in 10 games or been on the NHL roster for 30 days since.

So don't think it's 30 days since he was waived, they can have him on the NHL roster for up to 30 days or 10 games played before he'd have to go on waivers again.

For me I think you let him play 15-20 games in the AHL and then maybe give him a look.

Edit: The Wranglers play their 20th game on November 29th. To me that should be the target for him. Let him play 2 months / 20 games in the AHL. Hopefully he's still above a P/GP at that point and driving the line with Kerins and Hunt, and he can come up with a bit more confidence and having found his game.

			I'd try this.
 Huberdeau-Sharangovich-Kuzmenko
 Zary-Kadri-Coronato
 Mantha-Backlund-Coleman
 Lomberg-Kirkland-Pospisil

 Bean-Andersson
 Weegar-Pachal
 Bahl-Miromanov

Demote Hanley, rotate Miromanov with Barrie.

Maybe we can convince him to cancel his contract, but we need to re-sign him at $20M for the next 2 years. Tell me this is possible in the CBA please.

73 million dollars over the next seven winters makes summer margaritas even better.

Hey now. Huberdeau has a very important role on this team... he almost single-handedly ensures that we'll hit the cap floor for the next seven years!

			I'd try this.
 Zary-Kadri-Kuzmenko
 Huberdeau-RHC-Sharangovich
 Mantha-Backlund-Pospisil
 Lomberg-Kirkland-Klapka
 Rooney

 LHD-Weegar
 Bahl-Miromanov
 Bean-Pachal
 Hanley-Barrie

Demote, Coronato and Honzek until the TDL the they replace their appropriate UFA’s. Trade Coleman and Andersson for a top 4 LHD along with a top 6 RHC with the appropriate picks coming back. I also would not be opposed to using prospects who are close to the NHL in these trades.

After watching the first 9 games and preseason I would go with the following lineup.
 Zary Kadri Kuzmenko
 Huberdeau Pospisil Sharangovich
 Coleman Backlund Coronato
 Lomberg Kirkland Klapka
 Honzek
 Kerens

 Bahl Andersson
 Weegar Pachal
 Bean Brzustewicz
 Miromanov

 Vladar
 Wolf

I would dump Mantha, Hanley, Rooney and Barrie. Let the kids play.

Brzustewicz is 19 years old, has no goals and one assist so far in the ahl Sure let the kids play but maybe don't put them in situations they're clearly not ready for. We're still early in the season, the kids that need to be in the nhl will.

I want the 4 centres to be Kadri, Backlund, Zary and Pospisil. First, I thought Zary looked good at centre last season, and Zary was drafted as a centre or played centre in junior. Second, I view this season as being about the future, so I want to see the team try things that could reveal hope for the future, like finding young centres. Third, the team is looking to trade for a centre. Why not see if you have have another centre already?
 Sharangovich - Kadri - Kuzmenko

 Coleman - Backlund - Mantha
—I rely on two of the team’s top leaders to keep Mantha on track.

 Huberdeau - Zary - ?
—Huberdeau likes to mentor, so he can enjoy mentoring Zary. I think that could help him play well.
—I like this open spot for Coronato or Honzek.

 Lomberg - Pospisil - Klapka/Kirkland/Rooney
—This would be a high energy line, with Lomberg and Pospisil as the mainstays.
—If Pospisil needs help with face-offs, Kirkland/Rooney could help on the right side.

It's not, but in any event, why would Huberdeau walk about from about $50M???

After this season, he will have about $60 MM left.

Sign him for 3 years at $20 MM a year.

Probably not going to happen.

It’s going to take some balls to bench Mantha and Huby, but I think they’ve earned it.
Not sure what having two floaters on the team does to teach the kids how to be winners.

I’d hate this roster a lot less with Coranado and Honzek playing on it.

Let Huby be the popcorn eater if all he brings is a good attitude. Waive Mantha, he’s exactly what we knew he would be.

What's Kuzmenko doing more than these players? 2 points (both against the Jets) in his last 5 games and hasn't registered a single shot on goal in the past two games. This guy isn't a lot different than Mantha at the end of the day.
