Was rumoured for a few months but made official yesterday, Brian Thiessen is running for mayor. Has Stephen Carter and Chima Nkemdirim on board his team.

If that is his team, he's coming out swinging. And he definitely has a chance with them behind him.

He also says he will run with a party for this election (The Calgary Party):

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...mayor-election

Quote:
He introduced four candidates for councillor positions during an evening event at Platform Calgary. Thiessen noted none of them are councillors that are currently holding a position at city hall.

Those candidates are DJ Kelly in Ward 4 who narrowly lost to Coun. Sean Chu in the same district in 2021 and Heather McRae, who has worked with the Calgary Downtown Association, in Ward 7.

Contesting Ward 11 is podcast editor and public transit advocate Alex Williams and running in Ward 13 is entrepreneur Elliot Weinstein.
The Ward 7 news spells big trouble for Terry Wong, if other "progressive" candidates don't step forward he's cooked and won't benefit from all the vote splitting like last time.

It would be absolutely hilarious if Council ended up with more progressives, not less, thanks to the party system the UCP has implemented. They want conservative slate candidates to run, of which they probably personally approve of.

I don't see Gondek or Councillors like Chabot or Wong serving/winning a seat in the next Council. There is definitely room for some musical chairs.

There are times when I think our Civic council needs an enema.

Would be even more hilarious if a new centre-left party in Calgary and one in Edmonton were to coordinate a centre-left provincial party that displaces the NDP without all the NDP baggage and takes out the UCP.

Thiessen and Gondek are going to split the socialist votes, which gives a conservative candidate a better shot.

Ah yes, the dreaded and all powerful Calgary “socialist vote.”

I personally won't be voting for any candidate that is part of a municipal political party. I already didn't like the PACs in Calgary and their funding/support for their preferred slate of candidates and I hate official parties even more.

Then go ahead, throw away your vote!

Seriously though, it's looking like things are going to end up with parties all over the place. And then you have the wildcard like Farkas, what will he do? Go on his own or be part of a party?

I'm aligned via principles. We'll see if I chose to uphold them when I hit the voting booth.

I wish campaigns were restricted to a small pool of public funds and donations were banned.

I hope whatever happens in the next election, Dan Maclean ends up the worst off when it's all said and done. Would love to see that annoying, loudmouth conservative troglodyte not get what he wants.

Yes. Thiessen being the regional managing partner of major Canadian business law firm screams socialist.

That's my initial reaction as well. In the past I've voted for councilors from virtually all political leanings as their independence meant something to me. Now they will easy to exclude from consideration if the party a single policy that is a non starter for me or if they are aligned with a provincial/federal party that is a disqualifier to me.

Party politics at a municipal level is going to be a major adjustment for me. I honestly don't know how it's going to affect my decision.

Which is better?
