Agreed, I think the Flames currenlty could go as high as 26, just below Seattle whose tandem is a little more established. Everyone below that, including the flames, are dealing with new/young/prospect goalies who could go either way.

Yeah, not putting much stock in this.
Current performance? so 4 games?

So no, not two ESPN staffers pulling guesses out of their rear ends.
Actually, the article does not ‘clearly explain how the rankings are derived’. It doesn't say how they weight the inputs, or who the ‘variety of goalie experts’ are, or what points were covered in their ‘discussions’.

They talked to unspecified people, looked at unspecified numbers, and then did a ranking based on unspecified weighting of these unspecified criteria.

Sure. Clear as mud.

If you're going to release a ranking that doesn't take the current season into account, you should do it before the season starts.

If you're going to take the current season into account, you should wait until a significant number of games have been played.

This ‘ranking’ is just a regurgitation of old news. It's outdated at the moment of release. Mid-October is a silly time to do this.

Kinda hard to rank tandems before rosters are set. Given the amount of people the article claims to have involved, that kind of legwork takes time to assemble for 32 teams.

The Flames' ranking seems appropriate to me. You can bet ESPN will revisit later in the season.

Vladar is a career backup, and statistically not a very good one. Wolf is a smaller goalie with a lot of questions and limited starts in the NHL. Between the 2 of them they have fewer then 100 NHL games played and a combined save percentage of .895. It doesn't help that the Flames have a terrible record of developing goalies.

The ranking is fair. I personally think Wolf is going to be a good NHL starter. But until he proves himself its tough to rank us much higher.
