It’s common for these older types to use those qualifiers like adopted or step in their conversations so you know they have arms length deniability to the situation, I don’t think it’s malicious but it is a bit insidious. When some of those same types see have that type of antiquated language pointed out they get defensive. It’s pretty natural honestly. Think about how your dad reacts when you ask him not to use the word oriental.
They seem to assume since language doesn’t matter to them it doesn’t matter to the anyone. They hand wave changing societal norms as PC culture run amok and dismiss your “dude cmon don’t be like that” comments as things like outrage quotas. Kinda grinds my gears now that I think about it.

I agree with most of your post but it's not necessarily that the language doesn't matter to them and that's simply engrained from being brought up and lived in different times. As much as we expect people to change we have to remember the old saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is somewhat relevant in that the brain starts degrading at the age of 40 by about 5% per decade and the rate starts increasing at 60. It's hard enough for some elderly people to be nearly as competent as they used to let alone learn new things and have them engrained. That said, for all we know the poster could be young enough to know better. That's the problem as we just don't know which makes the arguing pointless.

IDK, man. His daughter is considering adopting this lady's baby. He'll be a grandfather to an adopted child. I think we may have just saved him a fk ton of embarrassment and family drama/hurt feelings by letting him know making a distinction between granddaughter and adopted granddaughter could make him look really bad within his family. Letting that slide here could have had real-life negative consequences for him.

Well you are trying to come up with reasons for what he said to be considered acceptable. And then you pointed out how he might be referring to her genetics, which he obviously was. I'm failing to understand why that could matter.

Do you really think it's likely his daughter is looking to adopt here, or is he virtue signaling in the same way he is using "adopted" to deflect judgment away from his friend?

Haha, no, I don't think for a second his daughter is going to adopt this baby.

I had a friend who explained why using oriental was fine for objects and not people many many years ago. Made a lot of sense so I eliminated it from my Lexicon. I assume that's still the case? Dumb whitey here.
She's now head legal officer for the Vancouver Canucks.

I bet the skater kid who almost killed the cyclist was adopted. That’s why he was such a bad driver. Adopted people are the worst drivers.

In hindsight, maybe getting the flu vax & updated Covid vax (not booster, updated vax) at the same time was not the best idea. :/ This is kinda sucking. Can't wait to get home & crawl into bed with some warm blankets. My bad, I didn't realize this was a wholly updated vaccine this time, not just a booster. I'm my own gear grinder today for not checking first.

I don’t think it’s just an out card. It goes deeper.
People who casually throw around “outrage” to dismiss or denigrate any reaction they don’t like or don’t agree with but aren’t emotionally or intellectually equipped to process it fall into the same category as people who use the word “triggered” as a derogative yet always seem to be the most sensitive, overly emotional and reactionary people you’ll find.
From my experience they’re usually weird bullies who deeply struggle with confrontation they haven’t initiated and immediately get defensive and scared when it’s returned to them.
That cyclist from earlier was basically what they look like in the wild. Approaches a car, pulls the door open repeatedly and gets in a young person’s face, and then immediately calls the cops and cries about feeling unsafe and how someone is being aggressive to him because they’re standing there.
There is an entire generation of tough talkers that are the softest milk drinkers you’ll ever encounter in your life. I assume most of them are more comfortable abusing people they perceive as significantly weaker.
Whenever someone uses “outrage,” “triggered,” or “mob” in a manner that seeks to denigrate or recategorize reactions into something they can feel superior to, you can bet with certainty that a soft breeze would knock them over.

Side effects seem to be totally random. I had both shots on Saturday with no reaction at all. Previous covid vaccines gave me a very sore arm and felt sick for a day.

It could be the cold that's going around. My parents are both sick.
Either way, rest up, Minnie.

The increasingly blurred line between home and work and the general lack of respect for personal time RGMG today. We are unexpectedly short staffed at work this week due a coworker unexpectedly on short term medical leave. We has a customer complain about the increased wait as a result and flat out stated that person should be able to work from home, there was no excuse for them to not be working.
