Great deal for both sides. Would love to see the flames lock up wolf long term if he keeps up his current play. (Not for 8.25 though)

Seems fair as he had a bit of a down season last year but the seasons prior were very good and he's off to a great start and looks the part of a franchise goaltender.

You're getting way ahead of yourself, Oettinger has produced 3 really good seasons. Wolf is just starting. If he can put up 3 seasons like that, even 9 million in 2028 would be a bargain.

Just our luck. Goalies get squeezed for a while, and when we get a hot prospect, the goalie pay scale goes up.

Still think only elite goalies should get anything over 7M per season. If you are mid-tier, you should be getting around 4-6M per season on shorter term deals.

If Wolf competes for the Calder this year and puts up another good season next we should 100% lock him up long term, 8 years and see where we fall with the annual salary. Let's not relive Treliving's mistakes.

I like this for Dallas.

Don't think this will be a Treliving situation. The CBA is up when Wolf's deal expires.

Would wait to see if term limits come into play.

I'll happily pay Wolf $8-$9M at age 25 if he continues to develop the way he has.

We gave a 30 year goalie $6M which accounted for 7.36% of the salary cap at the time.

With 2025/2026 projected to be $93.5M, it's not crazy to expect that the salary cap will be $100M when Wolf is up for a contract. Add an age premium for being 25 rather than 30, and a 30 year old getting $6M is still worse than a 25 year old getting $8.5M in my eyes.

I hope Wolf forces us to pay him $13M in two years. That'd be rad.

I feel like as these goalie contracts continue to come out in this price range, it's becoming less and less likely that Shesterkin will be able to get $11 million plus.

Again we can't just assume the cap will jump to 100M. The CBA is up. The cap was frozen the last 2 times, the last one being because of covid.

Outside of the pandemic Gary has had a lockout every CBA. The Canadian TV rights are up as well when the CBA expires.

For my money, Oettinger and Shesterkin are the top two goalies in the league. Good deal for Dallas.

Outside of 1 season he has had a save % of .913 .916 .916 and has never played more than 58 games.

It's ridiculous that he wants 11M plus a year. He was offered that, and it was turned down.

If he gets a double digit deal it will be one of the worst contracts in the NHL.

I’ll never be a fan of the long term deals for goaltenders but he has a lot going for him. He’s athletic and big and even if his athleticism decreases over time his big body should keep him around for awhile. He’s one of the best goaltenders around when healthy. But his back if I recall has had issues. All in all a good deal for Dallas.

Good deal. Oettinger has the track record to justify the 8 years, as well as the salary.

They offered him $11M, would not be a shock if he squeezed more out of the Rangers.

Shesterkin I feel is a slightly better goaltender because he’s been healthier, but what kind of justification does he have now that a comparable goaltender signed for $3M less? We know he compares himself to a franchise skater but it’s hard to qualify if this guy just signed for $8M. To save face he could do $11M for 5 so it’s not apples to apples?

I'd add Hellebuyck to that list, but agree on those 2.
Also Bob when he's on his game is as good as anyone, but he can be inconsistent.

IMO this is a much better deal than the Swayman one. This seems about right for Oettinger, and makes Boston look like the overpaid Swayman.

The prospect of having to pay a young goaltender big money is a good problem to have.
