That is exactly what they have in abundance. Extra draft picks and an abundance of cap space. Not saying they're going to use it but they definitely have the assets to make win now moves if they want.

The Weegar / Miromanov pairing is getting fed on nightly basis when it comes to play driving metrics.

Guessing that's not Weegar, but I'm sure he plays a role.

If it continues they'll have to try someone else in that spot, and yeah maybe we see Miromanov down the roster or out.

His numbers were great in a 20 game sample size last year, but they're suspect in a 4 game sample this year.

Move Pachal up. That may be too much for him, but he's been surprisingly good so far IMO.

The homophobic stuff from him bothered me a lot when it happened and when we acquired him, but ultimately Russians are a very indoctrinated people so it's not really his fault he shares those views, I guess.
From what I know he's never spoken about the issue. He just didn't wear the jersey, which I don't like either, but I also think we have to keep in mind he has family still in Russia.

But it's a leap to say that he shares homophobic views. Unlike the Staals who came out against the jerseys with statements. Kuz has never done that.

Not saying that makes it OK, but it is different.

Allegedly he signed a pride jersey or something after, so *shrugs*

With Buffalo struggling (again), and the temperature rising for their GM's job security...I wonder if there is a way to pry one of their young centres out of their hands (I am guessing Cozens is available, alternately some prospects like Kulick or Ostlund).

Cozens has all the tools, but had a poor season last year and hasn't registered a point this year. He carries a $7M hit and another bad season would make him a negative asset. Calgary is closer to home for him and may be able to surround him in the right culture to properly develop. He is only 23.

Kulich and Ostlund both are potential 2nd line centres. I suspect Buffalo wants to keep them due to their cap hits, but they would immediately stabilize our centre depth.
_______

Buffalo does not need D, so I don't think Rasmus is a realistic option unless a D is coming back.

They do need a culture change up front...proven performers and glue guys who bring it every game.

Ideas:
-Coleman + (Coronato/Honzek) for Cozens?
-Coleman & 2025 3rd for Ostlund/Kulich?
-Kadri (I doubt he would waive) & 2025 2nd for Cozens?

You can't stop the players from being good. It's unlikely, but in the event that various players, Wolf in particular, have upped their game, this will simply not be a lottery team.

If Wolf is a legit #1 goalie, Weegar/Andersson have become legit top pairing d-men, Huberdeau regains form, and a couple of guys like Zary and Pospisil step up, you've got a competitive team. This is all very unlikely, and the most likely scenario is that the wheels fall off. However, you never know.

I don't see Conroy mortgaging the future either. He seems to be a GM that highly values the pipeline that having a deep prospect pool creates. The real question becomes what happens if the Flames are a bubble team. Do they sell off vets, stay the course, or acquire players. Based on what I've seen from Conroy, he'll take a look at what the long-term prospects are and keep players that want to be here. I don't see him trading draft picks for players.

Once again, we're 4 games in. Not planning a parade. If anything, this early run (yes, considering how bad the Flames typically start, I call this a run) pumps up the value of players that may get potentially traded, like Kuzmenko, Mantha, Andersson, etc..

A few other thoughts:

1. The Flames draft pick in 2025, could end up being Florida's pick in the 25-30 range. Do the Flames look at moving that if they are sitting in a 6-10 position at the deadline?

2. The Flames seem to have built in chemistry in their depth players. Many of them are coming from a very successful AHL team, and they were forced by previous management to remain in the AHL well past the point they should have been moved up. The chemistry and winning attitude these guys have is a silver lining to their botched development.

3. The draft rules have changed to prevent the Pittsburghs and Chicagos from having unbalanced dynasties. Most of the last few winners have done so through solid asset management. Many teams that perpetually tank just remain bad. Even the Oilers acquired McDavid before they changed the draft rules and wouldn't have the same team, including likely not having McDavid under the new rule system.

The only type "win now" move I would be in favour of is if an Eichel-esque ttade became available.

Not sure if you even consider that as a win now move though since he was so young still.

Not too crazy about Cozens. He had a career year when everyone on the team did as well and sunk back down with the rest of the team.

Seems like a guy that may need to be propped up by his linemates like a Lindholm and can't carry his own line and make others better around him.

It's a serious issue in Russia. They legally considers LGTBQ+ organizations as terrorists.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe...ns-2024-03-22/

You can literally be arrested in Russia for donating to them if you step back onto Russian soil. It's ballsy for Russian players to do it and I have respect for the ones that do, but I can't blame others for being more cautious. Especially if you don't know their family's situation back home. There could be valid reasons for not want to draw the attention of authorities, like if for example you had a family member who was in the LGTBQ+ community.

Sounds like the Stars have signed Jake Oettinger to an 8-year contract extension at 8.5 AAV

Man, that Monahan trade with the built in Florida pick is hard to follow.

It might appear that we are going to draft 20-32 in the 2024 season. Same with Florida.

If Montreal defers and goes with the 2025 season, and we actually suck next year (like top 10 pick suck) but Florida is outside top 10, Montreal gets the Florida pick?

So we should be retaining the Florida pick no matter what?

So confusing.

https://flamesnation.ca/news/calgary...-canadiens-nhl

Also, if the wheels fall off here and we draft 10-20 in 2025 Montreal gets the lower of the Calgary/Florida picks?

It's a sunk cost anyways. Conroy can't sewer the team or roster just because of a trade Treliving made, despite what some fans want him to do.

Yeah I'm just trying to figure out the "what if" here.

What if we draft 20+ this season, Montreal defers, and we suck next year (like top 10 suck)? My fear is we are catching lightning in a bottle this season and it all comes crashing down next year, we are in a top 10 position, and lose it to Montreal.

Should we be trying to get that pick back from Montreal???

They are playing much heavier D zone starts this year than last. Could be contributing.

Weegars isolated 5v5 stats aren't jumping off the page either.

They also have the lowest % of starts on the fly. Which tells me that over have the time there is a D zone start, these two are the D men on the ice for it.

I'm pretty fine with them so far. They have been solid if unspectacular.

None of the other dmen are blowing the doors off with their much better zone starts.

Of course not, but it has to limit his aggression for this season I would think. He simply can't afford to treat this as a 'not my problem' thing, because the implications around the first round pick conditions are just too important for the future of the franchise.

To answer your last question: Yes, they should (and probably are). But Montreal has no reason to give it up.

However: I don't think Montreal can "defer" the pick. They're getting a 2025 first. Either Calgary's or Florida's. The only way they can get a 2026 first from this is if Calgary doesn't get Florida's pick, and Calgary's pick is first overall. If those conditions are met, Montreal will get Calgary's 2026 pick. But that's the only way that can happen. They can't choose to take the 2026 pick instead.
