It was going to be near impossible to repeat the PK performance from last year's playoffs. Now that they got rid of half the players responsible for it, there's zero chance.

And we still have an entire year before the new Draisaitl contract kicks in. Great start to the season for all parties involved!

That's what I've been thinking. The Oilers had so much good fortune go their way last year, it's going to be almost impossible to repeat the same performance this year. I still think they make the playoffs coming out of the weakest division in hockey, but do they have what it takes to beat a healthy Canucks or Golden Knights in the playoffs? I just don't see it happening, not with an older team with plenty of miles on those treads.

One game in, Holloway and Broberg each have more points than the entire Oilers roster.

I'm curious, because it can't happen very often, I think...but how often is a goalie chased out of the net in a season opener? That's got to be confidence and morale shattering.

Couldn't have happened to a better team.

That was nice of the Oilers to give their fans who forgot to make their “who will score the Oiler’s first goal of the season” prediction a few extra days to get it in.

What's worse: losing 8-1 on opening night while both your "1A and 1B" goalies give up 4 each, like last year? Or losing 6-0 on opening night while your only goalie gives up 6 on 19 shots, like this year?

EDIT: Nevermind, 5 goals on 13 shots... I didn't realize he got yanked. So yeah that's... that's definitely worse.

He sounded pretty down after the game. You love to see it.

Hopefully his confidence is shattered.

There is no way they are making the finals again. The stars have to align to get there. It did for them last year. It’s not going to happen again. They aren’t going to be able to outscore their deficiencies every night.

I’d laugh if they missed the playoffs.

I’d say this year because it was at home. They crushed their fanbase’s souls at the same time. Almost perfect.

Also last year they could go "well, it's one game, it's a fluke, we'll be fine". They didn't know that losing streak was coming. This year they're all no doubt wondering if it'll happen all over again.

I love how their fans had to watch a 5-0 score line for half the game.

Shhh, clearly they need to add more one dimensional forwards who don't backcheck, and never draft any more defensemen or goalies... It's "worked" so far!

Was out last night, so I taped the Flames game. I'm watching the first period and I thought it was interesting that there was not a single mention of the EDM-WPG game - no updates, no highlights, nothing, and I figured things must be going very badly for the golden boys. Then they go to intermission, and there is zero mention of the Oiler game at all and I thought it must be really bad, like a blowout like game 1 last year. Then about halfway through the 2nd, Stackhouse casually mentions that the Jets are up 5-0, and I laughed. Yup, so predictable - Sportsnet could not bring themselves to even talk about the Oilers being down. Had it been 5-0 Oilers, we would have been subjected to highlights between every whistle.

Some people think that the Sportsnet bias is just our imagination. It is not. Once you see it, and watch for it, it is INCREDIBLY rampant, among every single member of the Sportsnet crew. As I said, I knew the Oilers were getting blown out, simply by the silence, and the muted tones of the panel as they were (remorsefully) discussing the VAN-CGY game.

Please, please Hockey Gods... Please give us a TV contract from someone other than Rogers, for Flames games.

Also... Haha, stupid Oilers!

My favorite part is that they had the option of sending Philly their 2024 or 2025 1st rounder, and they chose to keep this year’s pick at #31. Like, you know the pick is practically guaranteed to be better in 2025, that was such a stupid decision. If the Oilers finish bottom 12, they keep their pick so we don’t want them winning the draft lottery this year but missing the playoffs would still be delicious.
