Are you putting them on yourself? If so, just watch the forecast and wait until snow and/or sustained cold temperatures are almost upon us. I usually do mine around Thanksgiving, but only when it looks like they’re going to be needed.
If you’re getting a shop to do it… good question. Beat the rush while it is still a bit too warm? Or wait but run the risk of needing them but not being able to get in?
I booked an appointment at my tire shop (Harper's Tire) for November 12th. Even if we do get snow before that date, the Scorpion Verde tires I have on there now are good enough to deal with a little bit of that white fluffy crap. They're storing my tires for me. And if we don't get snow until after, not a big deal, I can run the summer car until it snows.

Meh, I put my daughter's on this past Friday. She needed new ones for her new car, so there's no harm in getting it done before the hoards descend upon the tire shops. I'll put my son's on this Friday just to have it done, too.
For my new F-150 it has all weathers and I'm going to try to roll like that without dedicated winters. We'll see how it goes. I find trucks suck in the winter, anyway. I have had Blizzaks on my old F-150 and, honestly, they barely made a difference versus all weathers just because trucks have such wide tires and a light back end that they suck on ice even with winters.
If I'm not happy with the traction I'll get studded for the first time in my life. Any studded tire recommendations from guys who have them on trucks?

Factory all weathers? What kind of tires did they give you?
I think you'd be fine as long as we don't have insane Chinook thaw and flash freeze cycles this winter creating beautiful ice rinks around the city.
TBH, I feel like we haven't had these types of extreme conditions in the city for at least the last 3-4 years. Last two felt like the roads were almost always dry except for those handful of random ice rain/snow storms.
I'm trying studded tires for the first time on the van this winter. I get them in a few weeks. I'm curious to see how they perform.
I bought a set of new winter chinese tires from my mechanic last year for $650. I only got them as my brother got a set 2 years ago and it was more than decent.
Don't ask me the brand name! lol

The place I got my rims from also advocated a set of Chinese winters for cheap, I can't remember the name either. I decided to go with Nokians again though.. there's still 7/16 left but they're 6 years old and showing cracks around the corner from the tread to the sidewall.

Usually the problem is people wait too long and then have to find a shop that will book them in for a tire swap... making an appointment gets around all that. I can take it in, work on my laptop in the customer waiting area, and drive home in an hour or less.

Be careful my x ice were that age last year, a bit better condition. COVID I went no where. I ended up nearly sliding into a roundabout with my son. Limited traction on stop.
Age is a major issue with tires. I almost learned hard way

Put mine on on today. Probably could have waited another week, but I'd rather change them in warmer weather. One week isn't going to make much difference in treadwear.
