Not good news for Canucks. According to Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, regarding Demko and his injury, he's going to have to learn to play with this. It's not something that can be fixed with surgery. It's something he's going to have to learn to play through and he can play through to a high level.

Friedman also believes that the Canucks essentially rushed Demko back from his injury to play the last 2 games to determine if he was good enough for the playoffs. I actually think that this is something the Canucks absolutely needed to do, and don't think it's the wrong move.

Friedman is speculating on all of this and has no sources. He admits to this when he starts the piece.

It's possible that's true.

But I feel like there are also times when Friedman is sharing sensitive information that he hides it behind "This is just me speculating" because he doesn't actually want to get a source in trouble.

I actually hope Demko is healthy though, never like seeing anybody have their career limited by injuries.

Friedman is pretty good about making it clear when he is just spit balling and when he has a source. He protects his sources by just using vague "I'm told" or "I've heard" vs "it's my opinion."

He's adamant here that he is speculating on what he thinks is most likely to have happened.

Boeser looks like he’s going into his final contract season and then to UFA.

I’m a bit surprised by this. Is it because of the blood clots or is it money?

Just wondering.

As far as I know, the belief in media is that if there is one player on the Canucks who may take a hometown discount to stay, it's Boeser. The issue is what is a home town discount varies mightily on what kind of player Brock is.

Is he a 40 goal scorer on one of the top lines in hockey who plays 82 games?
Is he a 25 goal scorer who gets hot and cold through the season and has injury issues?

There's a few million between those two numbers even with a discount and both sides need clarity as to what he is.

The expectation is apparently that if he is off the USA Four Nations Cup roster that they will likely hammer out an extension over that two week break one way or another.

I don't see him as a 40 goal guy at all. He scored it once, which is cool and all, but I think he's a 25 goal, 30ish assist guy. Similar to Toffoli, I think Boeser will also contribute into his 30s.

Given he's not cutting off negotiations once the season starts, I'd agree Boeser's preference is to stay in Vancouver and get a retirement contract there.

Don't disagree but also if he does get another 40 goal pace going into the break, he gets that money.

Nothing says home town discount like "I think I got a lot to prove"!

So, according to Dhaliwal, the change around Ian Clarke was a demotion. Very surprising as I've always only heard great things about him.

That's surprising. I heard it was Clark who didn't feel he had the energy any longer for the role and wanted more time away. If the Canucks do end up giving permission to other teams, I hope Conroy comes knocking. No offence to Labarbera, but Clark has been known for quite some time at being incredibly good in his role.

Vancouver the city (and surroundings) is good.
The Canucks last year were, surprisingly, also pretty good.
This year I expect they will slide back to not very good.

So there are a mixture of things at play here. Ian Clark is not a young man. He has both a shoulder and apparently a hip issue that are not going to get better and are likely just part of who he is at his age so he requested a move to an off ice role and suggested the promotion of the AHL goalie coach in his place.

Now when Clark asked for this new role he envisioned moving into a Head of Goalie Development role that would see him off ice but overseeing the entire organization's goalie system (NHL, AHL, ECHL and prospects).

Unfortunately there is some belief within the organization that Ian Clark's hard driving style played a big role in Markstrom and Demko's injury history. Particularly Demko. There were some rumours that Demko and Clark may not get along personally as well, but that has since been debunked. So the Canucks were not sure they wanted that to be the team's policy top to bottom in the organization.

By all accounts, at his age Ian Clark does not want to leave Vancouver. He wasn't some shrewd get by Benning, Clark picked Vancouver because it was home. There is some belief that he may just slide into the scouting role and finish out his days close to home. But if a team, likely a west coast or near by team comes with an offer he may listen.

Sounds like there was a bit more happening behind the scenes in Vancouver between management and Ian Clark than initially thought according to Rick Dhaliwal.

Quote:
"I can confirm that," Dhaliwal said. "I don't think the relationship is in a good state. I think it's definitely soured."
There are rumours that the Devils are interested in bringing Clark into their organization, reuniting him and Markstrom.

After almost 30 years, Elias Pettersson is going to break a record when the season starts.

The highest paid athlete in Vancouver since Bryant "Big Country" Reeves.
