Did Flames management ever tell their prospects that camp was an "open tryout"?

All of these kids have been playing elite level hockey for their entire lives; they understand how this works; they are not going to be suddenly disillusioned about a ten-year pro like Mantha slotting into the opening night lineup ahead of them.

Exactly. This is the start of the season, the idea that training camp exists to see who is going to “make the team” is a fallacy.

the difference there is one is a first round pick who was projected to be a top 6 forward and was trending towards it until derailed by injuries.

No, I don’t think they ever said “have a great camp and you’ll make the team” but they did say that playing well and the right way is what they’re looking for and that there’s no guaranteed spots on the team for anyone. Yea, most teams say this and it’s more so just talk to motivate young guys but Craig didn’t say it for that same sentiment, he legitimately signed no PTOs on forward and was very clear they were keeping open spots for people to “take” during camp.

Not sure if double posted, and tbh, I don't have the patience or care to check.

Pretty cool behind the scenes of training camp

You gotta think it's a big bonus for these guys to be in Calgary with the minor team as well. Like how much better is that for them in the long run and makes it a bit more palatable moving through the organization.

It kind of bothers me that the top-9 and top 6 feature very few young players who can be part of Calgary's core once the rebuild is over. If you want to be integrating 2-3 rookies per year, is it Klapka and Wolf this year? And Klapka is a fourth liner...

I would have wanted to see a young defenseman make the team in the bottom pairing along with a young forward in the top 9.

Huberdeau-Pospisil-Mantha
Sharangovich-Kadri-Kuzmenko
Zary-Backlund-Coleman
Lomberg-Rooney-Klapka
Schwindt

Weegar-Miromanov
Bahl-Andersson
Barrie-Pachal
Bean-Hanley

Vladar
Wolf

Patience, it is an 82 game season and it hasn't even started yet.

Zary and Pospisil weren't on the team out of camp last year. Guys like Mantha and Kuzmenko won't play much if they're not producing and the team is losing in bunches. Hell if Huberdeau continues his trend line, healthy scratch is his next destination.

If this team is truly as bas as many think they will be, no way all these vets will be playing big minutes. There will be lots of spots in the top 9.

One guy is a third round pick that has been a plucky AHLer.

The other a first round pick that made a WJC championship team.

You don't see the difference in patience?
