Oooh that's a tough call, yet a good question. It's hard to make that judgement without watching Wild Robot a few more times. I think Wild Robot is funnier, and better younger kids. The humor is more obvious and is less reliant on the visual comedy from Iron Giant. I love the visual style from Iron Giant, and it'll always hold up, but the 20 years of improvements in Wild Robot really shows. I saw one critic say Wild Robot is right there with Spider-Verse in terms of animation style, and one of the best looking animated movies ever made.

If I was forced to choose between the two I'd probably go with Wild Robot... I think the characters being able to verbally interact with Roz adds a lot to the humor. It's a narrative that I hope delivers at the box office as well, as we need movies like this to succeed for original IPs to continue to be developed.

I do think many adults will say Iron Giant is the better movie, but kids will enjoy Wild Robot more.

Force of Nature: The Dry 2: This title gore is what happens when the studio wants to market as a sequel but the name of the original makes no sense for the follow up. It's an Aussie film that hits similar plot beats to the original, bringing back Eric Bana as a financial detective investigating a crime that is out of his element and has a connection to his past. I enjoyed the mystery that kept me guessing along with the filming on location in Victoria. The plot is a bit contrived and the tone is awkward at times switching between 3 different time lines. 7/10

Inside Out 2: When the original came out I was skeptical and thought Pixar had run out of ideas making a movie about what if feelings had feelings. Then I watched it and was brought to tears multiple times, considering it one of the best animated films of all time. So I was also skeptical of the sequel thinking Pixar was definitely creatively bankrupt and didn't know what to think about reviews calling it better than the original. Well it's definitely not better than the original but still an enjoyable movie. Does take a lot from the original with Joy going on a journey filled with visual gags to save the mental health of Riley while learning an important lesson. Most of the new emotions don't add much to the story and the conclusion wasn't as impactful as the original. I did think the portrayal of anxiety was brilliant and works for all ages, and as someone who attended hockey camp as a teenager I could definitely relate with Riley. 9/10

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The closest we will get to seeing Cavill as Bond. Felt this was let down a bit by marketing as an action movie when it's more of a spy/heist movie. I enjoyed the mix of humour, action, and spy shenanigans but wished the scope was smaller. Didn't think it needed a lot stuff with Churchill and Fleming as well as the hype about the mission completely changing the war. Cavill commanded the screen and played a very interesting character so I wish more time was focused on him and his team. 7/10

Renfield: Loved the premise, with some fun horror and comedy, while Nic Cage is brilliant. Started out super engaging but turned into a bit of a mess in the 2nd half with the strange gangland story. Definitely did not do enough with the idea and was more like a bunch of cool scenes barely tied together with a plot. Not sure if Awkwafina was horribly cast as she has no emotional range, or if she was perfectly cast because the joke is her character shows no emotions with all these crazy things happening. 7/10

Wonka: Is mid what the kids say these days? It's visually appealing and somewhat engaging but didn't really do anything for me. Does have some fun heist elements but it's not enough. None of the songs were that memorable and the soundtrack really leaned on nostalgia for the original. Did enjoy Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa but he was barely in the movie. Also am not sure how Wonka learning the value of friendship is supposed to tie in with Gene Wilder's recluse. As a fan of Peep Show I did enjoy seeing Johnson and Sophie on screen as the baddies. 5/10

Took the kids to see Wild Robot

Beautiful animations. Really great family movie with a few adult humor references. Story was fun and enjoyable. My kid said it was fairly close representation to the book

Ever since becoming a dad, seeing mom/dad and kid reuniting/leaving movies, hits me so much more emotionally. I actually started crying at the end.

Wild Robot is really good. Excellently crafted. Probably my only criticism is it's pretty predictable, but it does seem to be geared a bit younger than I was expecting.

It definitely does NOT beat Iron Giant.

My thoughts exactly. However, there are a lot of really really well handled themes for kids. Parenting struggles, non-traditional families, fitting in when different, pushing through adversity, the brutal reality of nature, issues with AI, I could go on...

A really, really smart film that was very well crafted and handled with deft tact and humor. 9/10 Anyone should watch this, not just parents and kids.

Getting in some more horror movies for Halloween and I watched a pair of 2000s remakes: Friday the 13th and Halloween. I actually prefer the remake of Friday the 13th to the original. It's not the best of the franchise but it's top tier. Rob Zombies Halloween is also great, and while I don't prefer it to the original I do prefer it to H20 or the 2018 remake.

Between Blank Check and How Did This Get Made, my list of movies lined up to watch is massive. Guess I'll catch up when it starts snowing.

Megalopolis is just as bad as the reviews are warning, I went in fully prepared but still checked the time thrice. It looks bad, it's executed terribly, the dialogue is bad and it's delivered terribly.

Shudder has added a bunch of great old horror movies. They have a whole category for 1980's classics.

Not an oldie, but I watched The Dark and the Wicked on Shudder over the weekend and I really, really enjoyed it. Lots of suspense, effective jump scares and great performances by the cast. It's a weird one in that once you're finished you're still trying to figure it out. 8/10, definitely check it out.

I found Wild Robot to be just okay. Certainly not on the level of the best animated movies ever like Iron Giant or Wall-E. It wasn't bad, but if people think it touches those I think our perspective about what is truly excellent has been skewed by a decade of crappy entertainment.

The story felt like it needed to touch every little piece of the world and then look directly at the audience with a character going "THIS is the lesson!". It's definitely feels geared specifically at kids under 10. And there were some small things that just don't make sense to an adult brain that, IMO, is the difference between top-tier entertainment geared at children vs just something to keep them occupied.

I could write a pretty long critique and get really in the weeds with it, but it's just a kids movie so it does seem a little pedantic. Point is I've seen it being compared to some of the best animated films ever and it's just not that. If you want something to take your kid to, it's pretty enjoyable. If you want to feel like you do when watching Wall-E or Iron Giant, just watch those.

A really silly part for me was the "animal infestation" defense at the greenhouse farm place being a crazy aggressive robot blasting lasers and destroying half the building.

Like I said, I could write a few paragraphs on the things that bothered me. But it's just a kids movie. It's not really worth the thought or type time. Thats kind of the point. I'd happily write a few paragraphs about what there is to love about better movies.

It was definitely a tier below Wall-E, but it's probably the best Dreamworks animated movie.

Pixar is on another level for a reason.
