I honestly don’t know what they plan to do with him.
I agree though, I can’t see them waiving him to risk losing him for nothing, but he really hasn’t shown anything thus far in camp that warrants him getting a NHL spot sadly enough.
He needs to play, being the 13th forward won’t help his development.
I honestly wonder if he’s going to be used as a trade chip if they have to send him down.

Klapka was a monster last night!
He definitely deserves to make the line up.
Looks miles better than when I saw him in the Wranglers playoffs last year.

Unless Pelletier has a strong finish to camp - he has to show a lot more than he has - I think it's very likely he gets waived. And I doubt he gets claimed. And if he is, it doesn't look like a huge loss.
Zary and Pospisil blew by him
Coronato is way past him
Honzek looks much better - and much more suited to the NHL
Klapka has a role in the NHL
Morton is looking better
And Stromgren looks to have more upside
And they have Basha, Gridin, Suniev, and others, coming.

Before camp, I would have ranked the waiver guys in the following order:
Pelletier
Solovyov
Klapka / Duehr (camp fight)
Now I would rank them:
Klapka
Solovyov
Pelletier
Duehr
And there will probably only be room for 2

I have to agree he hasn't earned a spot, but asset management is real and it would sting to see him blossom a year down the road elsewhere.
|
I don't see them waiving him or him even being the 13th forward. They are going to want him playing to develop. I don't see Coronato starting the season on the NHL roster either, no room. He had a great camp last year too and made the team but faltered, he has had more NHL time since then but him cooking with a Wranglers team that should be really strong won't hurt him until a guy moves to make room or an injury hits. Right now I see it as the following on opening night barring injury.
Huby/Pospisil/Mantha
Sharangovich/Kadri/Kuzmenko
Zary/Backlund/Coleman
Pelletier/Rooney/Lomberg
Hunt
Weegar/Miromanov
Bean/Andersson
Bahl/Barrie
Pachal
Wolf
Vladar/Cooley

Yeah at some point asset management is a two way street.
Losing a former 1st rounder prematurely that goes on to find it somewhere else is a loss, but not promoting players that are also young and have beat him out potentially hurts their development too.

When do we start looking at Rooney for a guy to cut?
Effective veteran but doesn't fit into the future, and won't return an asset at the trade deadline.
If you're risking losing a player you like maybe you waive Rooney to start the season.

I don't see any way they keep Pelletier over Klapka, at this point. Still a couple weeks to go, but right now? Klapka is way ahead, IMO.
And I think Coronato HAS made the team.

Ok, were are you putting Coronato? It doesn't serve him to get 8 minutes a night on the 4th line when he could be getting 20+ with the Wranglers so who are you bumping out of the top 9?

I actually have no problem with him being on the 4th line, because he would also get PP2 time, so he would get plenty of touches.
He showed in his 42 games with the Wrnglers last year, that he is too good for that league. Practicing with, and playing with the NHLers, is what he needs now.
As for lines - with injuries and line shuffling, he'll get time in the top 9. We don't have to write the lines out in ink for day 1, because they change - almost every night

This is such a refreshing discussion.
Instead of trying to figure out a way to squeeze some youngster(s) down through waivers because we signed some random noname veteran just "because", we face the same challenge - but this time because we almost have too many youngsters, with even more on the way.
I don't want to lose Pelletier, but it speaks volumes now as to why we might.

It's a good question. I personally have been thinking they re-signed him for the PK and have reasoned myself into thinking they'll keep him for that reason.

Coronato is tied for 2nd right now with 3 goals in the preseason, while Honzek is 1st in assists with 5 and tied for 1st in points with 6. When do the Flames get the preseason banner?

Remember when people were calling Honzek a bust because of his lackluster young stars tournament? Good times

I don't think Barrie gets a contract at this point. Blueline already has plenty of offensive weapons. I know rumors suggest otherwise, but on ice play will win out, IMO.

If on ice play wins out he is probably staying then, he has been good.

Lomberg’s energy reminds me of Lance Bouma’s year where he consistently injected energy into the team with every block

If they are in a NHL camp, you cut them from that camp and assign them elsewhere. Tinordi to the Wranglers for example
