I doubt many opinions change based on 1 exhibition game.

Under most circumstances I would agree with you here, but this is the Oilers we're talking about. They have a combination of poor pro scouting, desperation to win now, very limited cap space, and glaring weaknesses on their roster. You're telling me if Cooley goes on waivers next week they wouldn't think "hey we can grab this league minimum goalie who stood on his head and shut down our offensive powerhouse for free"?

The Mark Spector articles write themselves man.

Oilers already have better goalies under contract, they aren’t going to carry 3 goalies, as they don’t have the cap space for such luxuries.

Cooley is still just a 27 year old wild card.

Cooley is the last thing a win now team needs.

He fits Calgary’s needs better.

Well the opinions were already that he has a high ceiling, I imagine that game certainly didn't do anything to dissuade that.

Do I think it is a move that makes sense for a smart NHL GM? No

Do I think that the Oilers have a smart NHL GM? No

Do I think the Oilers are delusional enough to convince themselves that Cooley is a superstar in waiting because he shut down the unstoppable Oilers offence in front of their home fans? Yes

Do I think that the Oilers have anything to lose in such a transaction? No, only journeyman backup / failed starter Calvin Pickard who is 32 years old and has been waived half a dozen times in his career. He probably wouldn't even get claimed.

Do I think the Oilers have room for Cooley on their NHL roster? Yes, either by waiving Pickard or running with 13 forwards as they have been known to do. Kane's LTIR opens up enough cap room as well.

Do I think the Oilers are petty enough to claim Cooley off waivers just to "stick it" to the Flames? Absolutely

I'm not saying it's going to happen, or even that it's likely to happen. I'm saying I wouldn't be shocked.

Oh balderdash... he wouldn't get claimed. We're talking about a 27 year old guy that had a .891sv% in the AHL last year. The only way he would possibly be claimed is if some team with poor goalie depth has their back-up get injured right before he hits the wire (and even in that scenario I wager there would be debate about internal options).

Well I will believe what Kevin Woodley who is a goalie expert says on the subject and how many goalie scouts on multiple teams think highly of Cooley. His save percentage on a bad AHL team means nothing, his actual skill set, athleticism, and what scouts see in him does.

It feels like this guy basically willed himself all the way to the NHL without much in the way of proper coaching, guidance, training. Just pure athleticism and a dream.

You listen to him in this most recent video and can't help but wonder what he could be if given a ton of direct time, attention, and belief.

I'd listen to Cooley on the Fan 960 every morning.

Ignatjew is not waiver eligible so he def should not be on the starting roster

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 3 or 4 goalies playing games for the Flames this year. Depending on how things pan out when they get into games on the wranglers.

As well as Cooley has played, I just don't see them keeping him. They think Vladar still has some potential, and as he is now healthy, they seem committed to seeing if he can live up to it.

I see way more potential in Cooley than Vladar. Vladar's movement is just so subpar

Possible. But the only opinion whose matters when it comes to who making the roster is the Flames, and they seem to think Vladar has more to give.
