They didn't add market adjustments during Covid when absolutely everyone else was, so I dunno. Perhaps your experience is different, mine is the other way. I'd take the word of someone that works there if you've heard different cam.

They are absolutely pulling all sorts of brutal crap. Like some several thousand dollar "Alberta Package" on brand new Golf Rs that they won't let you dodge.

Why would you take the word of somebody who works there? They're biased AF.

Also, here's a Golf R for sale in Calgary: https://shop.southcentre.vw.ca/en/de...ent=Shop%20Now

Price is $56,827.05 including taxes.

There is an asterisk beside that price.

Scroll down and read the print on what that asterisk means.

About halfway through a giant paragraph in super small font it says "Actual selling price, leasing / finance rates and other terms are set by the dealer..."

I've experienced it first hand. And it says right there on the website lol.

It's a true wonder that dealerships have such horrible reputations, and everyone dreads having to deal with them. Gee, I can't figure it out!

I'm surprised there are enough people willing to buy MK8 Golfs with those ugly faces and digital-everything interiors at MSRP, never mind at a premium.

I went to look at a Kia Niro PHEV a while back and the first thing they said to me was I should expect to pay at least $5000 above MSRP to get one.

Kinda kills any hybrid advantage.

Don't worry, next generation will have the tail lights wrap around the entire body.

Exterior (including face) has grown on me to the point where I like them. The MK8 Golf Rs, that is, but I don't like the acne-looking mess of fog lights on the GTIs.

The interior continues to be a letdown, for sure. The 8.5 interior changes may help usability, but aesthetically it's basically a downgrade with an even bigger tablet.

I think just for pure fun they are almost in a class of their own still.

I wish they'd have slapped the Audi S3 dash in the MK8 Golf. I like that wacky dash in the S3 a lot.

I agree the Golf is a hoot, but I think you're just better off buying a MK7.5. You get the same fun experience...but in a better looking car, with a still functional interior.

For me, running everything through a screen is a deal killer. My wife just bought an Acura RDX (coincidentally at a VW dealer) with a pretty ridiculous screen/track pad setup...it's needlessly complex to even change a radio station. I don't understand how this is considered progress.

Agreed.

One thing I consider big progress is HUDs.

Had one in my Genesis and it was great. I think it renders the traditional gauge cluster obsolete in many ways, which leaves that real estate available for other things. A speedometer? Once you have that info in your HUD you never look down again.

In my new F-150 I was towing on the weekend. When I went into tow mode, the HUD changed, which I didn't know it would do. It lets me know what gear I'm in, has a tach that moves left to right, and my trailer brake gain pops up when I apply the brakes in a very non-intrusive, but helpful way. It's totally awesome.

Also, map direction show up in my HUD on my F-150...not just when using factory maps, but even with Android Auto. Now I'm not looking down at the screen.

HUDS are awesome and in the case of this truck executed so well in that it changes depending on what you're doing with the vehicle.

My hope is HUDs saves us from this digital fkn screen mess every car has. Plus....look at a bunch of BMWs, Mustangs, KIAs, etc. They're all the same. A kind of curved long skinny screen stretching from in front of the driver to the above the control stack. No personality at all. It's brutal.

Agreed, I find HUDs pretty awesome too. My personal cars are way too old to have them, but the ones I've tried with a HUD I've been a fan of. They give you the info you need, without having to look away from the road. That's the kind of tech I can get behind...not this crap where you need to go through 3 steps just to get your favourite station. Sadly, out of all the tech my wife's car has, the HUD option was not one of them.

Nah. I owned an MK7 Golf R and it was a fun but the new Golf R's have a far superior AWD system. Night and day better handling. As for the screens I don't really care as that's the direction all automakers are going and it wasn't that big a deal when I owned my Tesla. I set my climate controls to auto and never fiddle with HVAC controls even with physical buttons so no change for me and you should be using steering wheel controls to change songs/stations while driving anyway.

Speaking of auto HVAC, my 2022 f150 has the worst system I've ever dealt with. Has a mind of its own. Blows cold when it's cold and hot when it's hot inside. The number means nothing. Been told the sensor is by the rear view mirror which seems dumb.

I hate Auto HVAC.

I have no real definable reason, I just dislike it.

They're faster, and the active rear diffs are fun, but it's still a FWD car that maxes out at 50/50.

I think you accept that the AWD system will be "meh" at best when you buy one with a transverse engine layout.

Bought a Toyota Highlander today, 2021 XSE.
Never had a Toyota before; hope it lives up the reliability hype and gives us 10+ years.

Keep up with maintenance and “hope” is really only something you need if you want it to last you 30+.

Trick rear differentials can mask the transverse layout as has been proven by the past EVO's, Focus RS, and the MK8 Golf R. My MK7 felt 95% of the time like driving a GTI. I spent a few hours in an MK8 this summer and it feels like a different car. The interior is an unfortunate downgrade (materials and infotainment although I liked the new seats better) but that shouldn't be your priority when choosing a hot hatch. It should be what's more fun to drive and the MK8 is considerably more fun.
