There are no secure treatment facilities in BC for youth, never have been, pre the YCJA under the old YOA kids would be arrested under some pretext, given a reside and abide and a curfew and then breached into custody

The one part of the story I don't understand is why this kid was homeless at 13, basically what had gone wrong at home, why wasn't she in care, this level of oppositional and addicted behavior is incredibly rare in a 13 year old, I wouldn't normally expect to see it until a kid gets to 16 or 17 and even then homelessness by choice is odd (bearing in mind this kid could walk into any social services office and ask to be put in a foster home and would be housed immediately)

B.C. calls on Ottawa to restrict sale of machetes in bid to curb street crime

British Columbia’s attorney general is calling on the federal government to regulate and restrict the sale of machetes as a response to street crime.

Machete attacks in the Downtown Eastside and downtown Vancouver in 2022 and in 2020 also left multiple people injured, and earlier this year a Vancouver Island man said someone used a machete to slash his dog.

Or fend off roving street Gangs that constantly tempt me to "come out and play??"

I think a regular manscaping regime will keep it from getting to where you need a machete there, Zohan.

Good video on why involuntary care is a bad pathway to follow.

We already have involuntary care. The issue is where do you draw the line as to where people become a hazard to themselves and others. I don't think that anyone is arguing that anyone with a drug problem should be forced into involuntary care. However, there's clearly a problem now, as you've got all sorts of people suffering from severe mental health issues who are letting the streets act as their only form of treatment.

the trouble with this side of the argument is it basically only registers 'treatment good if addict quits', it's just as shallow a view as 'junkies are evil and need to be locked up' the truth is you can use secure treatment as a form of Overton window not to clean up junkies per se but to moderate their behavior, if you are staggering around the DTES on a 3 day run acting like a nut bar making life for the rest of the street unpleasant you should be taken off the street and taken away for a week or two, not to treat you as much as to change the behavior while using, a huge part of the problem on the DTES and with street people in general is we don't care if they live or die so we mitigate our guilt for that by not holding them to any behavioral norms at all

Yes, yes, but when is it acceptable to make them fight for sport? Or would the WWE sue for infringement?

WTF is wrong with Conservatives in this country? How'd they all collectively lose access to their brains? It's an epidemic. Perhaps some kind of mind virus?

I can't recall who said it, or what thread, but I remember someone mentioning a few days ago about a global conservative "training" that is happening. They are all being fed the same techniques for populism, the same talking points and marching orders. I really put most of the blame in Canada on the Acolytes of Preston Manning, but it is almost like he is just another drone and the Modern Day Conservative Borg Queen is out there somewhere.

Ugh, why can't one normal, level headed person run in politics?
Another election with no good options.

And people wonder why I don't vote regularly and have no guilt about it.
