Unless Wolf completely sh*ts the bed, and I mean literally unless he poops his bed and the Flames are worried about his mental health it'll be him and Vladar to start the season.

There is absolutely zero chance 27 year old, six NHL games Devin Cooley will be lost on waivers. If he is... oh no big deal.

I think it’s Vladar and Wolf on the big club. If they lose Cooley oh well.

Ideally Wolf is stellar to start the season, Cooley also overachieves and some other team is in need of a backup early on and we ship Vladar out.
It's probably more that Cooley was brought in to push Vladar and Wolf. It's been the first year in a number of seasons since they've had a clear number one, and so the extra competition is good motivation for all three guys.

Cooley is 27 years-old on a two year league minimum contract who has played 6 NHL games. He's not getting claimed unless a team loses their backup in training camp -- and even then, there will probably be better options available on waivers from other teams.

Well no, he doesn't. He just has to be waived again before they could send him down. Which is what would make it pointless because if Calgary loved him that much, they would just keep claiming him back until every one else gives up.

Totally. Wolf will start the season on this team. He's spent the last five years earning it.

I think there are a few more questions around Vladar with his health and performance, where Cooley could take his job, but Wolf will be there game one (barring the bed pooping situation you described).

Cooley and Ignatjew are both on two-way NHL/AHL contracts, while Connor Murphy is on a one-way AHL contract (he won't be sent down to the ECHL).

So there's three Wrangler goalies.

I don't believe that's true. It's hard to find AHL stuff, but I do believe players on a 1-way AHL contract can be loaned to the ECHL with the player's permission, although I could be way off.

But it makes sense. Players on 2-way contracts (NHL/AHL) can be sent to the ECHL.

But I could be wrong.

That's exactly it.

I'm not saying Cooley's chances are zero. He has more of a chance to make the team out of camp of people not named Vladar or Wolf. They needed to add some competition and are probably building it up for that reason, more than them really thinking Cooley has an equal chance to usurp one of Vladar or Wolf.

He'll go to the AHL and be first call up. I suspect he will get into some NHL this season.

Have you ever seen such a situation where a team keeps claiming a player until everyone else gives up?

Press release specifically says Murphy is on a one-way AHL deal, while the other players mentioned are on two-way AHL/ECHL deals.

Kind of, but in reality, teams don't tend to love these types of players very much. They're useful, sure, but not irreplaceable.

Closest I've seen is Jarrod Skalde:

In the 1997-98 season, he started off playing for San Jose. On January, he was claimed by Chicago. On January 23, he was re-claimed by the Sharks. On January 27, he was claimed by the Stars. On February 10, he was re-claimed by the Hawks. And then on March 6, he was again reclaimed by the Sharks, and eventually cleared waivers and made it to their farm team.

Doesn't that just determine that they have different salaries if they are sent from the AHL to the ECHL?

Ignatjew could surprise some people based on the way Conroy was gushing about him. Maybe even push Vladar out .

I mean Vladar is supposedly pain free and looking good but Ignatjew to be wowing people has me wonder what's going on and I like it.

Last time we had a guy getting this kind of attention was Kipper. Fingers crossed

Just did a deep dive on Ignatjew . This guy is pretty interesting. Goalie of the year in Sweden. Cool article about it in the herald I'd never seen before is a must read.
We have something here

I don’t know how a 27 yrs old with mediocre minor league record has big potential

It’s going to be Wolf and Vladar battle for the #1z
My guess is neither is going to show much as the team sucks and the dmen are well below average

Cooley and Vladar are the same age. The organization still thinks Vladar has untapped potential.

They are likely wrong.

But goalies can develop late and are voodoo, so who knows?

They're also the same age that Kipper was when he was traded to Calgary.

Ignatjew will be an NHL’er before the season is out. He will displace Vladar.
Him and Wolf will be the tandem that finishes the season.
He’s got something that the other don’t. Definitely a calm demeanour but just watching him and his style. Look out!!

But that’s just my opinion.
