They must be pretty confident he can make the jump.

Still has to clear waivers to go down... Slight risk he could be claimed. Some teams might like a 7th defenseman at that price.

Great to see, hopefully the kid can carve out an NHL career.
Both him and Kuzy are extremely close, albeit Solo being closer.
I also think Kuzy has the slightly higher ceiling whereas Solo has the higher floor, will be interesting to see how everything works out in the end.

Puckpedia is showing him as waivers exempt still.

Took me a second to realize you were talking about Kuznetsov...thought you were talking about Kuzmenko at first.

Four players that were previously exempt are becoming waiver eligible in 2024-25 for the first time: Connor Zary, Jakob Pelletier, Cole Schwindt and Ilya Solovyov.

According to Ryan Pike.

Very good deal IMO. Could be just me but whenever I’ve seen him play, I’ve thought he looked very solid and smooth. Plays within his skill set and doesn’t try to do too much.
I probably rate him higher than most would though.

In his brief call up at the end of last season he seemed to have great chemistry with his Wrangler teammates and wasn’t afraid to show some character on ice and in the media. He passed my eye test for playing stay at home, mistake free, heavy in his own zone defence which may be needed to compliment the high skill rover D the Flames are developing.

Solovyov signed his ELC as a 21 year-old which means he was waiver exempt for 3 years, or 80 NHL games played. He signed his ELC in 2021 so three years have passed. That's one of the downsides of drafting overagers.
In contrast Kuznetsov drafted in the same year, and signed his ELC at the same time, but he was 19 when signing, which made him waivers exempt for 4 years. That's why he becomes waivers eligible next year.

I never heard his name, which to me means he was doing a fine job during his shifts.

I liked Solovyov's game a lot more than I thought i would last season. Was still a bit raw at times and certainly made mistakes, but I thought he had good footwork and handled the physicality well, and generally didn't look out of place or over his head often. Hopefully that experience from last season will allow him to take a bit of a step this year and be an NHL regular this season.
