More so Jake Oettinger... Markstrom was very good in the Dallas series but Oettinger looked all world. Normalize for goaltending and the Flames win that series in 5 IMO.

Easily one of the best goaltending performances I’ve ever seen. I was in awe every game.

Oettinger almost stole that series and as a result of extending it longer than it should have gone stole the 2nd round series against the no goods. I believe Zadarov, Hanifin and Tkachuk all hurt themselves in the last two games of round 1. Possibly others.

I'm hoping for a bottom-10 finish so that we have an unprotected 2026 pick and they bottom out again, along with Vegas.
Calgary finishes last. Vegas and NJ finish bottom 10. Both Vegas and NJ draft spots win the lottery, pushing Calgary's own pick to 3 and Calgary has the 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall selections.

Tanev's injury in game 6 was probably the most impactful of all.

Don't forget Pesce probably won't be ready for the start of the season, either. He had that fractured fibula at the end of the playoffs.

Just the fact that he had a fractured Fibula in May and that can be a 4-6 month type thing.

LeBrun has a behind the scenes look at how the Markstrom trade came together (paywall)
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/577...shared_article
Quote:
Fitzgerald used the number of available netminders to his advantage, saying he talked to “as many teams as possible” to leverage the Devils’ situation.
Still, there was some urgency to the Devils’ pursuit. Aside from goaltending being a glaring hole on a roster full of young talent, Fitzgerald wanted to know how much salary-cap space he’d have to make other moves in free agency. He says he would have been willing to take Markström’s whole $6 million cap hit at the deadline — he’d have had time to adjust the books accordingly — but by the offseason, that option was gone.
“Once the deadline came and went, I was adamant there was going to be a reduction in his salary,” he says.
Though Morris says Markström never strayed from wanting to be in New Jersey, the goalie began to open his mind to other possibilities early in the summer. “There were more teams interested,” Markström says.
The Devils remained the prime fit, though.
With Calgary and New Jersey’s seasons complete, Fitzgerald re-engaged in talks with Conroy during the playoffs. The worst-case scenario for Conroy was other teams making moves before him, then Calgary ending up without a landing spot for a goalie who wanted out. The Flames deemed it time to make the trade, even if the return was less than they originally envisioned.

^ Markstrom's complaints ring a little more hollow after reading that if he in fact (with his agent) started the ball rolling towards a trade in the first place.
I had an understanding with the frustration of a deal not getting done if the Flames approached him and asked him to waive.
Different if he asked out.
The deal fell through and he was frustrated and lashed out?

Markstrom was angry because it was made so public (dont shoot the messenger) he was angry at the fact that a deal was made and leaked but then never came to fruition and then media started blowing him up about wanting out of Calgary.
This take fits perfectly in line with what I was told and what I shared, Markstrom was set on the Devil's as his #1 and that he was hoping to go before the deadline.

Unsurprising that Conroy got less back than he was asking at the deadline. By summer, pressure had shifted from the Devils to the Flames, who had to move Markstrom in a market with several available goalies. Back in Jan when the Devils still had a shot at the playoffs was probably peak desperation on their side. Conroy overplayed his hand, but live and learn.

Conroy got less than he asked, but was it less that he was offered previously?

It doesn't matter if he got less than he was asking for. It only matters if he got less than was offered at the deadline. Is there any indication that's the case?

Hard to blame parties in a business deal that falls through. I don’t blame Markstrom for wanting it to be kept out of the public eye. Puts him in a pretty bad position.

Right but it was obvious who the leak was then and even more now that fitzy loose lipzy is taking interviews on "how he won the trade". Lol, anyone buying anything that this guy is selling needs a lesson in source analysis.
Anyway, Markstrom throwing the team under the bus in hissy fit fashion on Kipper night was pretty embarrassing but he should fit the ethos of his new team well. Glad he's gone.
Pretty easy to see how the flames did on the trade tbh. There's a freaking contemporary comp right there. Would we rather have Korpisalo, a 25th overall and Mark Kastelic? Don't think so. Did people generally think Ullmark would be worth more? They absolutely did.
There, no reason to listen to this clown anymore.

Nope, might have ended up with an unprotected 25 1st if Jersey still landed in the top 10 but that would be about it. Fitz could have been offering the 25 1st all along anyways
