Was able to visit the memorial this morning, to deliver my son's letter and a bag of skittles at his request.
Pictures really don't do it justice. I was the only one there, and took some time to read as much as I could, and admire the tributes and arrangements.
The rain did make things wet, but everything was relatively in decent condition.
I'm glad I was able to go for myself and on behalf of my boy. It truly was a sobering and powerful memorial and tribute.

I finally got a chance to get by there yesterday afternoon and was nice to see a dozen people there. Sadly all the rain we had washed away the chalk.
I can't imagine how hard that must be to not only deal with such a tragedy but to have to attend these memorials in the public eye as well during such a tough time. It's just not fair.

It's just above the legal limit, and consistent with what he said he drank.
I assumed he'd be well over the limit.
Not that it matters.
Everybody metabolizes alcohol differently. Ive gotten disgustingly loaded and blew under 0.08, but in no way could I even walk. (My buddy had one of those police grade breathlyzers, and this was in the confines of our buddy's house just messing around and drinking)
I have been out of town so was not at the memorial until late this afternoon. There might have been an event at the Stampede grounds but there was a steady stream of people visiting. I was struck as to the diversity of the people. From all walks of life.
Amazing contribution from the flames with these items, so well done Calgary.
Signs, messages, and chalk: The site has been precisely photographed including all chalk drawings, posters, signs, personal letters, and messages. The photographs will be provided to the Gaudreau family as an everlasting digital memory book from Flames fans.
Hockey Sticks: Hockey stick benches will be created that will be used in fundraising efforts for local charities. Plaques identifying the benches’ origins will include "In memory of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau".
Skittles: The edible items that are no longer fit for human consumption will be counted and the Calgary Flames Foundation will make a commensurate financial contribution to the Calgary Food Bank.
Purple Sports Drinks: The plastic beverage containers will be emptied and donated to the KidSport Calgary recycling program. The program turns empties into sport opportunities for local kids in need, the access to sports.
Stuffed Toys: Toys made of cloth and cotton such as Teddy Bears will be donated to Parachutes for Pets, a charity supported by Mikael Backlund and Mackenzie Weegar. These will be used for the Lily and Dexter’ Legacy program - a groundbreaking program ensuring children in care can stay with their pets by providing essential support such as leashes, collars, vet care, vaccines, and licensing, created by the Backlund family.
Jerseys: The jerseys will be laundered and used to design blankets that will be donated to local charitable organizations.
Flowers: All organics will be collected and sent to compost. Soil from the flowers will be deposited in the earth at community park(s) around the city.

Really thoughtful approach by the organization. It would be nice if the organization or the city can find a meaningful way to share that "digital memory book" with the community (as part of the new arena, a public art installation, or whatever). Obviously, there's lots of time for those discussions though. Focus for the timebeing should absolutely be on the Gaudreau family.

My son was really happy this morning when i told him that his letter would be immortalized in a digital memory book for Johnny's family. This will go a long way for those thoughtful to contribute.

That's actually a low BA level considering what he admitted to having.
Which further shows that this is a behavioral issue just as much as it is a drunk driving issue. This guy was constantly putting people at risk driving like a maniac and it finally caught up to him (and unfortunately the Gaudreau's).
I've seen firsthand at least 3-4 instances of this kind of crap since the Gaudreau incident during commutes to and from work on roads like 14th street, 10th street too. People drive like lunatics and put everyone at risk to get home or to work 5 min quicker.
It's nuts and really bothering me more than ever after all this when I see it. Penalties for this kind of crap need to be stiffened and enforced because there seems to be too many people that have major issues and think it's ok to behave like this as a driver these days.

I had my bday party over the weekend and just wanted to say that of those who drove to my place, not a single one had an alcoholic drink. Not even a single one. We all talked Johnny Hockey talk for a bit and while I wouldn't expect any of them to get hammered and drive home, one drink would have been acceptable among the group, but none chose to. Obviously those of us not drinking was the complete opposite...but I was pretty impressed with those who still have the Gaudreau bros in their thoughts and deemed it better off to just hang out. No one said it outloud, but I'm confident that their passing played a role in that decision.
I still don't see anything positive that has come out of all of this, but at the very least I do suspect that quite a few more people will come to the same conclusion. At least I hope so.

Wow - this will also be special to a lot of the kids who visited the memorial and really looked up to Johnny.
