Really love the way Crosby's run his career contract wise. He's always seemed to understand that A) He needs to take less than he can to keep his team competitive and B) If he does that, everyone else on the team has to be in the same boat. And it's allowed him to keep his team in the conversation as a threat (with a few dips) his entire career.

Might be the new, best contract in the league if he continues at his current production level along with everything else he brings to the table.

What a fantastic signing by Kyle Dubas. Crosby is the first star player to actually take a discount that is impactful to stay with his team as far as I can recall. Not surprised either, Sid's just a solid dude.

Great signing. Good ambassador for the league who is loyal to the team.

Similarly, I think Ovie has also been on hometown discount deals for many years. I remember he has been on $9.5m per for like the last 15 years.

Ovi and Sid were quite unique in showing loyalty to a franchise and taking less to increase their chances to win. No surprise that they won...

Compare that to franchise players who haven't won...

Yup, 100% correct about OV too. These guys are absolute gems, great ambassadors for the league and actually loyal.

A look at Sid's cap hit as a % of cap.

Crosby will pass Sakic for all time points this season. He will move into 9th all time.

Just goes to show you the mindset of their generation vs the new ones (Draisaitl et al). This new generation is all about themselves. Ovi/Sid's generation just gets it. They've already made life changing money. Generations upon generations of their family are taken care of. They know their market value, take less, yet enough not to be disrepectful, so their teams can still build around them.

I will be the first to say I hated Sid when he came into the league, with the constant whining. But he has really grown and embraced the role he has grown into, as a true ambassader of the game.

Still can’t believe that some still say he left money on the table. In fact I could listen to arguments saying that it took more for him to stay in Edmonton. 14x8 = 16x7. Would he get 16M if he had gone to free agency?
I dunno

19 years at a cap hit of $8.7M. Pretty cool.

Or it's not a generational thing at all and just goes to show you the difference that the CBA and 8 year contract limits impose.

It's fun to trash the Oilers but it's not super comparable.

Crosby signed a 12 year deal at 14.5% of the cap and he's up for renewal on a contract that covers his 38 and 39 year seasons. He's the only guy that I think took a true discount of the former superstars, and he did it to retain Malkin, Letang, and Fleury.

Ovechkin signed a 13 year deal for $9.5M which was by far the highest salary at the time and 16.8% of the cap. And then took another $9.5M when he was already declining on a deal that most people said would look like an overpayment.

Malkin signed his 8 year $9.5M extension when it was 15% of the cap.

Drasaitl's deal is 15.9% of the cap. It's no discount for sure, but in reality neither Malkin or Ovechkin took discounts on their first major payday's either.

When I was young, I hated Crosby and thought he was a whiny baby. Now it's basically the opposite. He's a very good representation of for hockey.
