Jays released Tomo Ohka today:

The Blue Jays rolled the dice on the 31-year-old pitcher this past winter, signing Ohka to a $1.5-million, one-year deal plus incentives. But he was inconsistent in his 10 starts, posting a 2-5 record with a 5.79 ERA. In his last game with the Jays, on June 6, he was roughed up for five runs in 3 1-3 innings in Toronto's 6-2 loss to the Devil Rays.

In 56 innings, the Kyoto, Japan native allowed 68 hits, 10 home runs, 22 walks and recorded 21 strikeouts. He was signed as a free agent in January 2007 to a one-year deal.

The only reason I knew anything about Thoma was from his days as an Expo. He was barely an average pitcher in the NL even before his injury.

The one thing that's making me keep some faith in this team is we finally may be witnessing the emurgance of these young pitchers actually coming of age. It be nice to have a rotation with actual home grown talent then having to punch in all these fringe free agent pitchers

Rumor was Penny for Rios in the off season or something to that effect.

Should have dumped off Wells for Penny!!! I imagine Brad is happy he stayed in L.A. though. If he's playing in Toronto theres no way he's dating Alyssa Milano.

In other baseball news Micheal Barret is on his way to the Padres for Bowen and a minor league outfielder.

Well, the Jays scored EIGHT RUNS in the 2nd inning, capped off by a Grand Salami by Frank Thomas.

Wowzers that was fun to watch!

Jays off to an early 8-0 lead against the Dodgers. Frank Thomas with a massive grand slam to put this one out of reach. Anyone who watched, you just knew that at-bat had something special in store.

Back to back yacks for Zaun and Stairs to lead off the 3rd! 10-0.

This is what I expected from the Jays this year.

well, if you ever had to bounce back from a blowout, that's the way that you'd want to do it. Halliday notching strikeout #1000 for the career. nice.

giving up 6 runs in the 8th...not ideal.

Jays come back from 8-6 in the 10th to score 3 in the bottom to win it. Johnny Mac with the single to score 2 and then catcher throws it away for the winning run.

'course I missed it because I turned the game off after the Jays gave up a 2 run homer in the top of the 10th.

I suck.

I caught the 10th inning only, what a comeback! The last 2 singles were on terrible pitches, Johnny Mac and Thigpen were just trying to get the ball into play. And then the catcher throws it into left field and the winning run scores. Sweet!

The Hurt with 4 RBIs early in the game so far - really starting to hit well for the Jays.

The game today is on CBC with Jim Hughson on the call - great to hear him doing baseball again.

To echo Jiri Hrdina's point, it is awesome to hear Hughson again calling baseball. Reminds me of when I was probably 10 or 11... I still miss Buck though.

My favourite part of today's game was watching Thomas try to stretch a single into a double. Don't remember the last time I've seen a guy arrive DOA by that large of a margin. Even he was laughing about it on the bench.

As Jiri said, nice to see him warming up a bit at the plate. Hope to see it continue.

If the Big Useless keeps this up, I may have to start calling him by his real nickname. nice job, Frank. Now, if you hit your 500th homer next Friday in Seattle when I'm in attendance, that'd be even better.

;-)

I wonder if 30 seconds would be enough time to settle a 100 meter sprint between Frank Thomas and Benji Molina. Hard to believe that guy used to be a NFL calibre tight end in college football. I thought Tight Ends needed to be able to run a little bit. And from what I remember Thomas wasn't a blocking tight end either.
