The tax question doesn’t really matter though as housing costs dominate all discussion of affordability when comparing Alberta to BC. But as a philosophical exercise it’s still interesting.

If you really want to go down a rabbit hole add cost of living. Groceries in particular seem to be significantly cheaper in Ontario and Quebec, anecdotally speaking

What box do I have to check on my taxes so I can opt out of spending 43 million of government money on a charter school?

It’s beside the box you check to opt out of school taxes because you don’t have kids in school.

I'm unsure why any public money would be going to build a private school. Couldn't that just go to building a public school, or restoring funding to the schools we already have?
Seems like bad economic policy, unless somehow we are going to reap a profit through enrollment, or redeem value by having the school support something specific, like at risk kids or severe learning disabilities. Yes, I know that's dreaming.

Although it might go some way to retention of teachers in the province, as private schools have lesser class sizes and other positive traits. It's almost as if private was made more appealing to educators on purpose. But that would take aa insane, flailing Lagrange, and I'm sure we don't have one of those lurking in the countryside.

Charter schools in Alberta are specialized public schools run by a small or independent board. Students that attend them don't pay tuition, though they may have uniform fees; and activity fees that most public schools also have.

Because they want the public system to fail, it’s too progressive for them. They want the health system to fail. They want the cities to fail. They don’t want success, it’s why they are so dangerous, they value some weird and warped sense of purpose and will destroy things to prove it.

Why do all her press releases sound like an angry marmot screaming into a microphone set to 11? Why is this a press release, and not a "we are looking to discuss with the government issues around immigration numbers to Alberta"? She always jumps to the last step.

"Yet, the Trudeau government’s unrestrained open border policies permitting well over a million newcomers each year into Canada is causing significant challenges, and it’s simply not sustainable."
Canada does not have "open borders". Nor does the United States, for that matter. It's actually very difficult to emigrate to Canada and the USA. Why do ignorant conservatives keep repeating this lie?

So the party that spent millions advertising all across Canada that "Alberta is Calling" is upset that the population has grown so much? The province with the largest group of settled Ukrainians is upset that Ukrainians are coming here?
That must be the Beaverton.

My first instinct when I saw the headline Fuzz posted was that it must be the UCP appealing to racists who have a desire to keep those people out of the province, but given that it specifically mentions (white) Ukrainians, I really don't get it.

Part of the problem is that it's no longer hard to move into Canada on a temporary basis and then seek permanent residency from there. Temporary foreign worker and student is a programs have expanded dramatically since covid and both offer a path to permanent residency. Immigration was and still is hard but the huge influx of people comes from shortcuts around the immigration procedure.
I know this because my entire team at work have immigrated to Canada for the job and they are frustrated at all the other fake students short-cutting the process. Apparently, Uber drivers openly tell my Indian colleague that they got in through the "fake student trick" because he's also Indian (he immigrated through the normal channel).
Danielle Smith still stinks but she's bringing this up because it's a real pain point for many Canadians struggling to find work or housing as population surges.
