I think it's wierd the US is freaking out about Haitians and yet seems to have no clue what the US did to Haiti supporting Papa Doc and the Tonton Macoute in the 60's that were both indescribably brutal and directly led to todays instability
The Administration knows. They just dont care.
The General populace? They may or may not know. But why do you think Trump's rhetoric works so well?
Those victims weren't Americans. So they're effectively sub-human and not worth worrying about.

You think it's weird that people dense enough to believe trashy racist xenophobic internet rumours about immigrants eating pets don't know their history? That's the weird part?

Haitians could have been any nationality and the story would have been the same.

Trump's gameplan is to stir up the wackos and get them to the polls. He preaches about economic issues to build a voting base, but then uses the wack jobs to get to the finish line. If you can rally a few percentage points of the voting block with each of these asshat statements it adds up.
In 2020 both candidates destroyed the previous records for most votes cast. The Republicans did so by rallying the fringe voters. The Democrats likely did even better by getting people to vote Trump out.
Anyways, I wouldn't say it's the USA freaking out about Haitians collectively.
My brother was in the air flying from Minneapolis to Boston when the planes hit the Twin Towers. He still talks about chaos when his flight was diverted to Detroit where there was a mad scramble to get a rental vehicle of any kind. Guys in 3 piece suits standing on the side of road in the rental lot hoping to thumb a ride as all the vehicles were rented out.
A client told me he was stranded in Houston. He rented a car and drove for 4 days to Montana, where he had difficulty crossing the border.
This is by far the best 9/11 documentary I've ever watched, and if you've never seen it you really should
2 French filmmakers were following a fire crew for a completely different documentary they were making and just happened to be there. It's where the most famous footage of the first plane hitting the towers comes from (24:30), and after that point it becomes an on-the-ground shadowing of the first fire engine to reach the towers and what they went through that day. It feels like you're there with them, and that's why no other piece of 9/11 media hits as hard as this one for me

It got worse when the planes started flying again. My brother said it would be dead quiet when people boarded planes. If they saw someone that looked like a Muslim someone complain and that person would be removed from the flight and later questioned. Flyers were paranoid and scared 9/11 might happen all over again. My brothers response to all that was if we didn't board those planes again the terrorists would have won.
This video came up in my Youtube feed. It's a pretty harrowing story about the last person to escape the south tower before it collapsed. The guy is actually a Canadian who just recently moved there. Listening to him talk, you can sure tell the experience took a huge mental toll on him.
