Treliving left him no choice.
Since he wouldn't/couldn't go long term with him due to his UFA signings, Tkachuk choose the only reasonable option open to him to give himself maximum flexibility and leverage.
How can you blame a player for that?

As much as I appreciate Tkachuk's hatred of the Oilers and how he still has a soft spot for Calgary...the actual "You know I couldn't let Edmonton win" comment is a bit funny to me.
He actually wasn't very good in the finals.
1 Goal, 3 points, -3, and was part of the absolutely terrible Panthers PP that almost cost them that series.
Keep up the hate, thank you Panthers for beating the Oilers, but really you're still a jerk for not just re-signing here.

Tre got owned. Calgary should've gave Chucky the golden handshake when they had the chance.

I've been trying to find any kind of an update on how Monny is doing, so I keep googling "monahan gaudreau" every day. Today, I was just going through some old stories that came up, and one of them was this quote from Tkachuk when we lost to Dallas...
Quote:
After watching on from the press box as his team was eliminated from the postseason, Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk is coming to the defense of his star teammates.
"The thing that really frustrates me right now, especially with being out and watching the games and having nothing to do... so being on my phone and just being in the bubble, everything is about hockey ... I couldn't believe some of the criticism that some guys on my team were getting for this," Tkachuk said, per Sportsnet. "Especially the criticism towards Johnny (Gaudreau) and Monny (Sean Monahan), it makes me sick. It really upsets me and pisses me off."
"Everyone was upset about them for offensive production. Well, they produced more offense than me. So put the blame on me. I didn't do nearly enough to help get this team over the top when I was in the lineup, and that's what hurts the most."
|
That's a friggin Captain right there.

The thing is...I know Oiler fans will tout that they were 1 win away.
But thats not the honest truth.
I've been on both sides of games like this. Once Florida was up 3-0 their foot was well and truly off the gas. They thought they had it in the bag.
As soon as the situation got real again? It wasn't even a contest.

That +/- stat is pretty misleading, to be quite honest
He was -3 in the 8-1 blowout, plus in for 2 empty netters in the 5-1 loss and another empty netter in the 5-3 loss.

Take away game 4, take away the empty netters... and he's +3
Not bad considering he was out there a lot vs McDrai

Exactly
The whole premise is kind of dumb
His team won with him, not in spite of him
He and the Panthers ####ing won. It’s locked in. It’s history. The Oilers lost
Who really wants to work hard to nitpick a contribution to a greater good

Whenever Matthew comes up I think of those two Oilers guys who kept getting camera time clutching their lame Tkachuk turtle pictures during the final.
I smile when I think about how sad those two turds must be.
Oiler fans are no good.

Tkachuk leaving stopped the Oilers from possibly their only Cup in the McDrai era.

Tkachuk and Bennett preventing the Oilers from winning the Cup was the Flames playing 4D chess all along.

Yeah its great because of how butthurt it gets Oiler fans but he almost blew it...if they lost game 7 he would have be reason #1 for his no show against the Oilers AGAIN. Lucky for us Drai was also a no show and the Panthers were deeper.

This is how I'll always see it. So satisfying!
And Lombo, he went down for a tan and to extinguish the oilers dreams and then came back when the job was done.
