Most players leave the game before they hit rock bottom. I don't blame Giordano for trying but a lot of talented players would rather retire than play at a level far lower than their career average.

Mike Keane played 1161 games in the NHL, won 2 Cups, and then played 5 more season in the AHL with the Moose.

Giordano may want to try his luck in Italy... He'd almost certainly make the national team, with the next Winter Olympic games being hosted there in 2026.

No thanks to Gio when this team should be all about the rebuild and giving younger guys a chance. If something happens with an injury in camp to a regular then sure he is a low cost feel good option but even then I think give a kid a shot instead.

With Andersson I think the Flames should take a similar approach as they did with Lindholm but take it 2 steps further and trade him this deadline as well as retain half of the salary. Craig got so much for Lindholm because he took back Kuzmenko who didn’t fit with the Canucks and clearing that cap hit for this season helped pay for the Petterson/Hronek raises as well as the money to sign Debrusk. Calgary got the pick, top prospect, and extras. For Andersson they should be willing to take back a contract with the same length or maybe an extra year, retain half so the team acquiring clears even more space and land multiple picks and prospects including a top prospect from a team. Conroy has to hit this one out of the park since it is his last truly great piece he inherited that expires before the rebuild is over.

I do think the Flames are going to be very aggressive in the summers of 26 and 27 to be good for the new barn but I think they are going to focus the next 2 drafts on picking high. McKenna is an absolute franchise changer and the team hopefully doesn’t miss out like they did when McDavid was coming up

Blake Coleman is another guy who I would hold no ill will towards if he wanted a change.

The guy as an American, wanted to come here, he embraced the city and the team and played hard. He's earned the right to chase a cup again.

Guys like Coleman and Andersson are perfect deadline fodder, they don't make enough to be too much of a cap issue and they would be huge additions to teams looking to load up for a run. They're also the type of player that will show up to camp ready to work and play hard.

I honestly feel bad for a guy like Huberdeau, he didn't asked for any of this, and he's stuck. He was flying high coming off a 115pt season for a team knocking on the door. Now look at him. Now I know he's got some dolla bills to wipe his tears with, but I feel for the athlete side of things

If Gio wants to be in management he should retire. We can’t be gifting roster spots.

Love gio. Love Conroy. Love Iggy. But I don’t want them being old and grey being tossed out on the ice just because.

If Andersson requested a trade this off-season, then sure there'd be room for a vet like Gio to help the young D prospects.

But as it stands there's not enough room if we also want the kids to get opportunities.

I really respect when former star players are willing to put their egos aside and accept depth roles. Chelios is an obvious one. Even that clown in Edmonton, acknowledging his on/off-ice issues and the garbage franchise he plays for.

Not sure it’s putting your ego aside. No one is giving a prominent role to 40 year olds.

No of course not. I just appreciate when players accept lesser roles because they love the game.

Is a bottom pairing a prominent role? Would even argue that Gio is likely our 3rd best defender if we did sign him. Conroy just prefers ice time for the youngsters, and that’s okay.

I doubt it, I like Gio however if he signed he is likely the 7th dman.

Age has caught up to him

This type of signing would make no sense for the Flames

The devils have $4,976,103 though, so theoretically they can and would match that. They don't need to sign anyone else to fill out their roster, and IMO they need mercer in their mid lineup more than adding elsewhere.
Mercer would be signed by the Devils or to an offer sheet already if $4.5M was the ask.

He's looking for $5.25M minimum based on comparables.

To Montreal:
Pelletier + 2nd

To Calgary:
Our 1st round pick

Use 1st to offer sheet Mercer at $6.8m

That’s giving the devils a top 10 pick. Mercer gets us out of bottom 5 but not out of a non-playoff spot.

Hahaha no...this year's first should hopefully turn into a far better player than mercer.

In all likelihood they'd be giving us Florida's back. They aren't getting the Calgary one unless it's not top 10.

If the Flames pick, say, 4th...and Florida makes the conference finals...both of those seem possible. Would you trade Pelletier to move up from 36 to 29? Seems like a bit of a sell-low move.

Or the Devils loosing Mercer makes them worst than the Flames, and we already have their 1st this year.

Mercer is criminally underrated, he's 5th in scoring from the 2020 draft and that's playing behind Hughes and Hischier. Do you think the Flames will be bad enough to draft in the top 4, I think we'll be lucky not to draft 11+ and just hand the pick to Montreal.
