The braintrust of this team doesn’t plan on finishing bottom 5 - they want to all least be in the wildcard race. It sounds like if the team is in the cellar at Christmas, that will change and they’ll revise the plan.

And I do get it from Conroy's side.
In the last couple years you lost Gaudreau and Tkachuk already, and then moved Toffoli, Zadorov, Tanev, Hanifin, and Markstrom. So you are trying to fight against the "nobody wants to play in Calgary" narrative a little bit by not moving more of these guys.
But with Coleman who is coming off a career season at his age, that's the guy you have to move if he's said he wants to move because he opened that door for you.

Conroy has a plan. Not all of us fans are going to agree with his plan but he has a plan and he is sticking to it.
I feel confident in the future of the Flames with Conroy as the GM. He is showing that he won't be pushed over by other GMs, he seems to have well thought out reasons for what he wants to do and when he wants to do it. He seems to have communicated that well within the organization and there doesn't seem to be anyone not willing to be patient.
He won't nail every move 100% but if he stays consistent and doesn't make moves just to make it look like he's making moves then I think we can have a solid team for many years and hopefully one that is more consistent than the up and down team that Treliving built.
Conroy is working towards building a solid base of young players. I think the hope is to snag a couple foundational cornerstone type players in the next two drafts and surround them with all the other youth they draft and acquire.
Treliving came into a team already in a rebuild and he wound up jumpstarting that rebuild to try and contend earlier than we all thought would happen. It felt like Tre was always chasing the leaks. We had depth in one area but holes in another so he tried to fill the holes by using the depth. Okay, holes filled, oh wait, where did that depth go? ... more holes to fill.
I feel that Conroy has come in and laid out his plan and told upper management and ownership to trust him and let him follow the plan through. As long as they let him do so I think Conroy will build us something we can be proud to be fans of.

Perhaps but ultimately with that blueline and goaltending - I just don't see it.
Hockey is weird, random stuff happens, but on paper, this isn't a team that will be in the race.

Yeah, aren't Backlund, Andersson, Coleman, and Vladar the only players left from the team that finished first in the Pacific in 2022? Oh, and I guess Duehr played one game that season too.
I wouldn't be surprised if Backlund is the only one of them left after this season's trade deadline.

^^ If this team makes the playoffs they're probably going all the way. That would be the Cinderella of all Cinderellas.

The only reason this team might have a playoff chance is a weak division.
Anaheim and San Jose will be improved but it's unclear by how much, really depends how good Carlsson, Celebrini, and Smith are.
Seattle's roster is just as bad as the Flames IMO.
Vancouver, Vegas, LA, and Edmonton are the division favourites but those teams all have some flaws too.
Edmonton still has questionable defense and goaltending and very old.
Vegas lost Marchessault and Stephenson and their not as deep.
LA...hard to read if they are better or worse this season.
Vancouver, maybe the only team in the division that actually added and could be seen as better this season.
Overall it's very unlikely but if there is a chance it's because our division is bad...similar to 14-15 which kind of scares me because in the end that season derailed the "Rebuild" last time too.

Similarities between the 2024-25 and 03-04 Flames:
- Rookie goalie with lots of athleticism and potential
- Czech backup goalie
- Decent center depth and defensively responsible centers
- Star winger looking to rebound from a disappointing previous season
- Two steady defensemen and a rag-tag mix of mediocre journeyman and unproven guys filling out the rest of the back-end
If Huska can channel his inner Darryl Sutter, we'll all be marching on the red mile in 9-10 months...otherwise I'll eat my own pubes

I think Conny is fully aware that we need at least one year of finishing bottom-5 in order to have the chance to secure an elite talent in the draft.
If he's not, then he should be.

I dunno, those comments from 32 thoughts just sounds like he's echo'ing default GM speak when in the middle of a tear down. Kind of like when Bettman insists that no one tanks.
I'm sure for at least one season the plan will be to finish bottom 5. Especially considering the moves made last season.

God I hope so.
I get that even though he might think that, but he also doesn't want to come out and say it right before the season starts.
This team is such a wildcard. With teams like sharks and ducks, there's still not much there beyond the rookies.
The flames have tons of wildcard vets, guys who have produced at high levels and I could see it happening again. The d core isn't what it was, but it's still a middle of the league group.
I would not be supprised if they finished 17th-22nd in the league. I still put them in the mix of the blues, kraken and coyotes on the west. The bottom end of the wildcard teams.

I can confirm the Flames are very high on a number of the higher end centers in 2025.
I'd wager given their organizational depth need that this would be a priority going into next year.
(Sorry this isn't any particular order)
Frondell
Ryabkin
Hagens
Misa
McQueen

Not having Hagens at 1 is very interesting to me.
If we get the 1st overall and didn't take Hagens I'd be pretty dissapointed (as of now, lots of hockey before the draft though).
