This stuff isn’t dictated by the fashion industry. It’s just a natural generational reaction. Teens want to look different from the adults who are 20-30 years older than them, so they do the opposite. And since those adults themselves did the same thing, you wind up with a 40 year old retro look coming back, like we see today with the 80s fashions (ie shorter shorts and long socks). For some reason, Millennials seem surprised that Gen Z wants to look different from them.

Not me. I want my bank and sales staff to look nicer than t-shirt.

I know what you're going for, and to an extent I'd even agree.
During Tax season at my office, its 'Business Casual.'
Heres the thing. You come to my office after Tax Season and I'm in shorts and usually a soccer jersey and almost certainly sandals.
Thats fine. I've earned that. I did my 'suit and tie' bit.
Going into a Bank? I dont care if you're decked out head to toe in Armani I'm going to think you're an idiot until I can be convinced otherwise. Bankers? I've dealt with hundreds of them in my time. I dont care what they wear, my opinion is low.
Age and Experience.
Buying furniture? Some people would consider a well dressed furniture salesman to be 'Professional' but you know what I consider it?
"A well-dressed lie."
The more you have to dress-up to do a job, usually the less qualified you are to do it. Obviously with exceptions, some people genuinely like getting dressed up and thats fine. I have no objections to that.
I went and saw a prospective client a few years back and, because I do taxes for her entire family I agreed to go to her place of business rather than have her come to my office. That was a favour.
She gave me a bit of a bad vibe over the phone, but that happens. Can't read into that too much.
I showed up in my usual post-tax season attire, T-Shirt, Shorts and Sandals. And she says to me:
"You don't even care if you get this account do you?"
Nope.
I've got tons of work. I'm here as a favour to your family. The mistake you're making is that you think you're interviewing me whereas the truth is, it is very much the other way around.
So yeah, if someone can dress and act that casual in a Professional setting? You have to make a call. They're either a complete idiot or so outstandingly competent and confident as to not care.
When I first started doing taxes I was 18. I could have passed for 14. I had to dress professionally or nobody would trust me.
I paid my dues.

Ok cool, so everyone agrees. I think it's stupid as well.
We had a shirt and pants mandatory and casual Friday's not a big deal. A new ###### manager came, after kissing ass. THe first thing he said was no casual Friday. No more coming to work without a tie, and if his boss is coming to visit he wants everyone in suits and cuffs if they have them.
Does wearing all that make you work harder, or change the perception people have you? #### no.

Yes. It does. It absolutely does.
A man in a suit tells me that he is a Professional and he takes pride and diligence in his work. Or that he's at least putting some effort into trying to con me.
Someone in a professional setting dressed casually? Now thats an enigma.
The dude in the suit could be trying to fool me into thinking he knows what he's doing and the the person dressed casually could be either a moron or brilliant (theres rarely a middle ground there) so...
And at the same time...I know people who LOVE putting on the suit and tie. They just really like it. To me its 'Prison' but to them its fantastic! So thats a wild-card.
So, as the ancient Russian Proverb goes: "Trust. But verify."

I still found it bizarre how we as a society went from minimizing socks (ankle), to eliminating seeing them altogether...to suddenly completely embracing them, and it's now a must-have look even with shorts. I finally got used to no-show socks which took forever, I can't keep up!
It reminds me of the Simpsons, Jasper episode where he freezes himself, just replace "hem my pants as fashion dictates" to "change my socks".

Late to the party but I love my 5" inseam shorts. They're especially great on those +30 days. Comparing some of the posters above to the weather thread, maybe some of the cargo short wearers would enjoy summer more if they trimmed their inseams.

The same could be said for the client.
What about the ones who roll out of bed and go out in their P'Js and slippers?

Dude, I know you've got a lot of experience, but I can tell the difference between the Armani Bank Manager and the guy in the Grateful Dead t-shirt and the F-you hat.
And sometimes that gulf is not as wide as we'd like it to be.
It is unprofessional. You are absolutely right. 100%. But I also dont want to be lied to.
The number of impeccably dressed imbeciles I've run into in my time? They may as well wear a flashing warning light on their heads.

Just the kind of guy you want to be floating around the Atlantic clutching a pillow full of Beer Farts with!
