Whilst mouth breathers everywhere will tell you that this, this is the singular item that gets it done, I’m going to disagree.
For the upcoming season, the only difference is that there will not be distractions about pissy signing. It will create the questions about Mavi, even although he can’t do anything about signing until next summer, but pissy questions are now finished about signing. The team is as you see it today.
For the following season, the pissy contract takes effect, and the Mavi conversations start. One key difference though will be the team. Assuming a cap increase of less than $5.5, it means that the team will be less, or more discounted, and the team will be 1year older. If it is $5.5 cap increase, then the pissy contract consumes the cap increase in its entirety. Same discounted contracts, 1 year older team.
I don’t know what the Oilers could have realistically done differently. I do think they kicked the tires on what they could get in a trade, but realistically they had to sign pissy to get a shot at re-signing Mavi.
I think pissy’s agent did good work for the client.
I don’t think pissy finishes this contract in greaserville though. At some point, the unwashed will recognize that a retool is needed and they will drive pissy to the airport for the same bobbles and bits that mid 30 former stars making $14 per year get.

Nobody’s doing anyone any favours at $14M a year.
Not too long ago, that was quarterback money.

It's the biggest contract in the league and it almost certainly involves at least 4 years past Draisaitl's prime. It's the exact opposite of a favor. Draisaitl squeezed every penny out and will almost certainly leave the organization in a horrible position in the future.

It’s not incumbent on stars to take less.
His deal came up when he came up, and he made 30% less than McDavid last time.
They either want him to stay or they don’t.
If they let him go, they can’t credibly try to keep McDavid.
There is no other play here - you pay these guys and try to tinker around the edges as best you can, and let the chips fall where they may.

They need to pray that the cap increases by 25% by 26/27

Barring a global pandemic or a world war, the cap is going to keep going up.
The appetite for NHL hockey as content isn’t going down.
Pay Bouchard, try and upgrade Skinner, and don’t draft your own picks for the next five years.
They’re fortunate they picked up Savoie - if he has a strong season, they might be able to use him to convince someone to take Nurse.
As an aside, I will never get over that Nurse contract. Nobody told them they had to do it. They could’ve said “no.”
But they fell over themselves to give Darnell Nurse $72M after an obvious outlier season that wasn’t even that good.
E=NG indeed.

Do you think it will go up by 10 or 11 million a year for 2 years? I think it will be really tough to get rid of Nurse and if they want to sign Bouchard and Mcdavid, when all of those contracts kick in they will be in some trouble if the cap hasnt gone up that much

Lockout 1 had a 39 cap, when the PA was ready for 45
Lockout 2 had a cap rollback.
Covid CBA extension had a cap freeze up until now.
CBA expires in 2 years, can't just assume the cap will keep soaring. The Canadian TV rights will play a significant role as well, they won't just get bailed our by Rogers with a ridiculous offer.
That deal kept the NHL afloat as they only revenue from TV in the US nationally was AD money from NBC for a while.
Things are going great for the NHL right now, but that won't stop the owners. The NFL and NBA have a ton of money, that didn't stop them from asking for a larger share of the pot and more punitive tax measures.

This part is really interesting, the Canadian TV deal was 5.2B over 12 years (433M/year), With an 88M cap, the HRR this year is 5.6B. Just goes to show you how much of a gate driven league this still is

What a good boy that Leon, making sure the Oilers will have enough money left to pay a backup goalie.

It's more likely he does sign now I think, but it won't be at a discount either. And if McDavid signs elsewhere, Draisaitl can just demand a trade. He squeezed every dime and guaranteed himself $112M. And why wouldn't he.
McDavid will be $130M+

The NFL season is starting tomorrow. TSN started their show with almost a 15-20 minute segment on this signing. Every insider needed to chime in lol.
We should have September 3rd as a national holiday now. Draisaitl Discount Day.

He will just take that 500K that he left on the table and scoop it up.
I think he signs as well, he probably can't give his leverage away although he holds the hammer on this.

Rishaug claimed that the Oilers offered $14.5M and Draisaitl and his agent said "no, I only want $14M"?
Does he think people are imbeciles?

The new US deal helps as well, but with new buildings going up some people will be priced out of going to games.
The NFL and NBA understand that, look at how they are doing TV rights now. They know a lot of people like to watch at home now, or streaming etc. THey are getting boatloads of money that way. Even WWF is going to Netflix.
The best blueprint they can follow is the NBA because of the similar regional rights and schedule.
If they get a big TV deal like with the US one the owners will want their piece as well.
