Tough to argue they'd be better served when they came within a game of winning the cup a few months back. This contract (and McDavid's next one) are going to kill the Oilers down the line, but that's not new news, that happens with all these contracts. What it does do is extend their current window 4-5 years and if it does that they're laughing.

McDavid, Drai and a goalie capable of stealing a game or two isn't a typical NHL recipe for success but it;s working for hte Oilers as of right now, and I'm not sure they have another option
They were also within a game of losing in the 2nd round to a third string goalie. Giving Drai a 5.5M raise from 30-38 doesn't improve their team IMO.

It certainly doesn't extend their window 4-5 years like we can debate this coming season but the Oilers get worse every year after that its not even debatable. Bouch, Drai, McDavid, get massive raises and older, no money for even the depth they have now, and no prospects to fill in.

"for a haul" is just so vague. Cannot fathom what they'd get for him beyond a handful of futures.

Here's to another decade (10 years) of hoping that these guys strike out in the playoffs every year. BTW Crosby just dropped 94 pts at age 36. You can continue to recycle the pieces around McDrai through FA and try to limit team age that way.

I don't know if it's bad per se. The Oilers have their team for this year and they're going all out whether Drai has this extension or not. This is their last best chance and after that it will start getting tougher as the teams age will start to show.

The Flames are going to be bad and trying to collect picks so it's not like the Oilers are competing with them in that sphere.

The Penguins in spite of Crosby's stellar play have still missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons and have not won a round since 2018 which was prior to Sid's 31st birthday. Once all the top players get to 30 now it is tough for teams to keep competing at the highest level. The Oilers should go for it. It's risky to do because if you don't pull it off you can end up like the Sharks are have been. But no risk no reward and they have have maxed out the future risk.

They could get the high end dman they need plus

Drai this year is fine but at 14M, even the first year its gonna be hard to live up to that. Panthers are paying their top goal scorer and #1 dman 14M total, just an example...a winning example

It's tough without knowing what the return could be

For example would the New York Rangers have offered something like Chytil, Kandre Miller, Kakko and some picks for Drai...maybe.

And maybe that makes them better, or maybe in the end they are worse who knows. I'm the end keeping Drai is probably what gives them the best shot of keeping McDavid, and really that's the most important thing because with that freak you always have a chance.

In the end it's never a bad thing to have McDavid and Draisaitl. Really them for $16 and $14 isn't going to be the issue. It's just becomes an issue with Nurse making $9.25M and then Bouchard also needing a big raise.

But extending Draisaitl isn't really the issue because losing him for nothing as a UFA would have been much worse

Most of your post is debatable, but this point stands out. There are 2 players who are now part of the Blues organization who left the Oilers to make more money. There are always players who will take less to play in certain cities or for certain teams, it's not something isolated just to Edmonton. The entire league isn't chomping at the bit to take less to play there, as we've witnessed within just the last few weeks.

This contract is great for the Oilers and Draisaitl.

Draisaitl gets paid. In the early years of the deal, Oilers get yhe rest of Draisaitl at/near the high level he plays at in his prime. In the later years, the Oilers get 14mil in LTIR relief from just one guy, who isn't even as good as he gets paid to be.

Solid gold genius on this deal.

Not only that, the market for a player just bought out by his former team is not normally $3 per year it's way less. And 31-year old Arvidsson is making $250k less than prime, uninjured 24-year old Arvidsson. Hard to call that a discount. Draisatl just came in over hopes and expectations. Henrique got a lower AAV as they gave him 2 years. There's no basis for these apparent discounts to play with McDavid.

Does he get this deal if the Canucks finish off the Oilers in 6 in round 2?

$16? Lol. Why would McDavid take a penny less than the max to go anywhere?

Draisaitl signing this extension is bad for Flames fans.

1. There won't be any media circus in Edmonton this year which could potentially have a negative impact on their season.

2. There is no chance that he is leaving now and most likely a new contract for McDavid will follow next year.

3. They have generally the same team signed for the next couple of years/will be able to retain so they have atleast 2 more kicks at the can before the new contracts for McDavid, Draisaitl and Bouchard kick in.

4. The cap is going up and that will mitigate the increase in these contracts.

5. Players will continue to take less than market value to play in EDM with McDavid and "chase" a Cup.

TLDR: Another 10 years of McDrai is simply not as good as if they had just left over the next couple of years. As long as those two are around, they will always be a pain in the ass.
It takes a lot of ingenuity to take a guy who has averaged over 100 points over 82 games for the last 6 seasons signing as a negativity. Signing good players long term is always good news for the team that signs them. A much much better scenario for the Flames and anyone who hopes the Oilers lose would be a trade or him not signing.

Totally wrong, because the next season is a given, and you’re going to pay $14M for the 8 seasons after that to a 30-year-old? Bless your heart.

Lets see how this ages starting next season...I see a mediocre old team locked in for nearly a decade. Its a fine line, they were legit bad at the start of last season. When they have to remove what little depth they have it will be a struggle. We can revisit this thread...I wouldnt want to be on the wrong side of history defending the Oilers.

I see this as a floor raising trade but also ceiling limiting.

I think the oilers reduced their cup odds in the 2-5 years from now by doing this (Assuming in the Drai walks case you kept McDavid).

The challange is for 14 mil does he generate enough of his own offense and can his power play points be replicated by someone else? Now if by signing him at 14 lets you keep McDavid then you pay the tax and move on.

Also rapping this up now improves odds for this upcoming season as it eliminates a distraction.

With a competent GM I would've disliked a trade much more, because they could get some youth, McDavid could have made them very good like he did Drai, and they'd have a future beyond the next couple years. But with Bowman this is probably their safest course.

If the Oilers dont have a GREAT season how do they convince McDavid this is a winner next summer when they are losing depth and not gaining anyone. It really is cup or bust. An early exit could really change things.

This seasin is the best they will ever be, pressure is on

It would have been anyway, and they just blew a 9-figure stack of cash on a declining player. Killer move would have been a Matthews deal, but it seems Draisaitl is smarter than that.

He should take the max, and the NHLPA should be pressuring the hell out of him to take the max, but he most likely won't since he wants to win a cup.

In the recent salary cap era no player has come close to the max of 20%, nobody has even exceeded 16%.

The absolute max id guess we see is 18% of the cap, which if the cap is $92M next July 1 would be about $16.5M
