I was just counting forwards and defensemen, and I am not remotely convinced that Skinner will still be in the long term plans by 2026.

I think I mentioned this in the Jarvis thread. He is not taking a discount, and he is not deferring salary like TMZ was hoping and praying, it was more likely he takes more money up front.

Of course that's why he signed. And McDavid will follow suit next year for an even bigger pay day. The Oilers' problem now is that they'll have so much money tied up in 3 guys, the rest of their roster will continue to be a dumpster fire, including their goaltending. And that's now how you build a championship team. They'll continue to make the playoffs every year, but I highly doubt they'll ever win a Cup if both of those guys stay.

The bonus doesn't help the AAV. But they didn't really have a Plan B here.

Dom and AFP models both have it as an overpay. The oilers are like the seagulls in Finding Nemo....."MINE! MINE!!! MINE!!"
Champions like Crosby and Bergeron take discounts knowing there are other mouths to feed.

You are likely right, but this was the only cards the Oilers had to play.

I was hoping Leon would walk, but if he re-signed my only concerns was it would be a more team friendly contract. Now that we know, he's being paid quite a bit more than Matthews and MacKinnon. Both these guys have great players playing with them but IMO both are better players and Matthew's contract does not go until he is 37. Matthews would break Gretzky record for goals in a season playing with McDavid. MacKinnon has Makar, but he also put up 140 without Mcdavid.
This contract also guarantees McDavid will be at minimum $14 mil per year, but I really doubt he doesn't sign for a higher amount and probably $15 mil per year.
If Leon gets $1.5 mil more than McDavid's current contract, what should Bouchard get over Nurse? I would not be shocked if it was $11.5 mil per year.
How are they going to match Colorado when Makar and Mackinnon have 3 more years @ $21.6 combined cap hit? Oilers last chance is this year. I really can't wait to see what Bouchard gets, it's going to look so much worse when that gets announced.

It hurts to say that, but then I feel we are in for a treat another decade or two of darkness from the Oilers.

They have been close ONE time in McDavid's career and when you factor in the upcoming contracts there is zero realistic way the team improves beyond this season.

No one takes discounts. The problem for the Oilers is that both Crosby and Bergeron were Champions already for many years by the time they were Draisaitl's age.

Stan is just getting started. This is how it started in Chicago, but at least with the Hawks they won 3 cups.
They never made it out the 1st round again.

I would bet money that the Oilers are not a top 10 team in the first year of McDavid's new contract should he sign. I hope he does now, will be glorious to watch their smug faces lose in Edmonton.

They could be worse off with them, then without them. They are aging, and too much $ is tied up among too few players.

McDavid
Draisaitl
RNH
Arvidsson
Hyman
Henrique
Janmark
J. Skinner
E. Kane
Bouchard
Ekholm
Nurse
Kulak
S. Skinner
are all signed for the next couple of years.
What are you even saying? That's probably the betting favorite for Stanley Cup. They got way better than last year with the addition of Arvidsson and J. Skinner.
Hate them all you want. Not having a decent team is not one of them.

It's happy days all around.

Again they will have to go free agent shopping almost yearly, because they have no prospects and picks. Trades will be hard as well.
You don't build winners through free agency. Look at their roster today.
The forwards are 3 drafted players. McDavid, Crysaddle and Nugget-Hopkins.
THe back end is even worse and laughable. Darnell Nurse and Bouchard both of whom will ikely tie up 20M in cap space shortly.
10 fowards currently that they signed in free agency. The defence is so pathetic its not worth it to check who they traded for or signed in free agency.

I wonder if there would be a possibility to trade Draisaitl in the next two years. He has a NMC, so it couldn't happen without his consent, and that would also likely reduce the value of any return.
