The one thing I like about this is that it maybe quiets some of the complaining that Calgary can't sign top players because no one wants to play in a smaller Canadian market.

The other piece of good news is that by the time Flames are competitive again, those two should be starting a decline.

Unfortunately not much doubt they should be contending for next few years

That's gonna be a lot of retention when he's traded.

Huge contract for his declining years. Draisaitl's body won't hold up.

Few? They arent going to have any depth...it gets worse starting next year. In 2 years the Oilers will be far worse than now.

Draisaitl isn't a young star. Nor was Gaudreau.

He did keep Matthews, albeit not on what you'd call a long term deal. He signed Nylander to an 8 year.

I think the key thing to remember is that the Oilers didn’t get better today with this announcement. Their 2nd best player simply became considerably more expensive in his post-prime years.

If I counted on my fingers correctly, the Oilers have $78,162,500 counting against the CAP for 2025/2026 season with Bouchard to sign and 4 forwards and 1 defense spot to fill. Under the 2024/2025 cap that leaves $10M to sign Bouchard and replace 5 players. You can be sure the Cap goes up for 2025/2026 so lets say $12M... Unless Bouchard completely derails he is getting paid huge. The Oilers have to make some touch choices to fill out a full roster for the 2025/2026 season. It will get even tougher if they manage to keep McDavid for the season after that. They're in Cap Jail for a few years.

Of course, in 5 years, its entirely possible that 80-90 points equals a $14M player with the rising cap.
Yes, by year 5 of this deal the cap will have gone from 87 to probably 110 or more. 14 in a 110 million dollar cap is the equivalent of 11.1 million today.

Been saying that for a while, when deals are originally signed they take the most money they can get it. Contracts only start to look like a deal when the cap starts to increase.

It's not like they have large endorsement deals.

I'm curious to see how the hell the Oilers are gonna pull off keeping both McDavid and Draisaitl together + Bouchard while staying under the cap

This “one foot” narrative should really end.

Locked him up for his 30 to 38 year old seasons at a $14 million AAV?

Perfect.

There was never an issue with small Canadian markets signing stars. Winnipeg was able to, Vancouver was able to. There was an issue with one GM being able to sign stars.

How are they going to afford Skinner/Bouch/McD and field a competitive team?
