I'd love to read the article from the alternate timeline where they picked up Askarov, and Rodrigue was an insignificant throw-in going the other way.

At a $14M cap hit, how can they possible pay McDavid? He deserves more than Draisaitl. This isn't a neck and neck situation as to who is better between McDavid or Draisaitl. It's McDavid, who is the face of the league. Either McDavid is gone at the end of his contract (or even after this year) or the Oilers will have only two players who can do anything productive for many many years.

By my count, that is $78 m committed in 2025 before needing to extend Bouchard. A $39 m cap hit for six players under contract in 2026.

Yep, so that leaves them with about $14 million (assuming cap goes up to $92 million next year) to fill 6 or 7 spots including Bouchard. Unless he inexplicably takes a bridge deal (and why would he when he has Arb rights?), he's getting more than Nurse on a long-term deal which leaves them with $4 million or less to fill 5 or 6 spots.

By the time the 2026-2027 season begins, how many years will be left on the Nurse contract? If McDavid re-signs, that will be the year his new contract kicks in. I’m pretty sure Nurse’s contract is buyout-proof so they would have to trade it by then. The cost would be at least a 1st round pick++ which would further hurt their ability to supplement their team with young, const-controlled talent.

His contract expires at the end of the 2029-30 season, when Nurse is 35 years old.

Wow! Thought he was further into that contract by now. There’s still so much time left on it. Yikes! Would be really tough to trade that contract even by 2026-2027. If they try to trade it in the summer of 2026, it will still have 4 years left.

I still suspect the NHL will have one free buyout that comes out of the next CBA negotiations. If that happens you just buyout Nurse.

You are working really hard to find a way for the Oilers not to be in steady decline over this contract
Oilers best shot is this year and it gets continually worse
