At this point it’s time to move on from figuring out how to get Huberdeau going and just build our team.
I’m sure he will click with the young talent we bring in. If he can become a pp specialist and get buried on the 2nd line and kind of forgotten I’m sure he will get some of his game back.

Dallas is doing pretty good with two past their prime stars making way too much money but still contributing

We talked about Dallas a bunch already. It’s not really a model to follow they struck gold with a draft class and winning the lottery. They also focus on drafting well.
We are not close. The next 3 drafts are huge and we need to pick really high in at least the next 2. That should be our worry, not Huberdeau. This team isn’t going to be competing for a while still.
That’s why dumping Mantha for picks is the best call, and hopefully he returns us a good pick.

We need Huberdeau to maintain the cap floor. That’s his role on the team now.

Exactly this. Pump and dump. even if you are getting 3rd rounder territory at the deadline, you do it.

Whether it’s this year or next, Huberdeau-Parekh is gonna be a dangerous connection almost immediately - book it.

Yeah but they are a unicorn. Their success at finding franchise talents in the late 1st round and 2nd round isn't something teams can simply emulate.

Okay but the Flames aren't doing it that way seemingly...they seem to be in a full rebuild. That doesn't mean Huberdeau can't contribute despite being overpaid in the future.

Is it just me, or is the "unicorn" analogy for hockey getting played out? It's really not a good descriptor for an entire team.

It isn't even a unicorn situation. They are getting surplus value on the Robertson, Hintz and Heiskanen deals (and formerly the Pavelski deal) which currently balance out the overpaid guys in Benn and Seguin.
Shoot, Benn and Seguin are putting up second line numbers on the second line. They aren't completely tanking their deals either, although you don't want to be paying second line guys 9 million a season.

Getting several top end players without having to rebuild is a pretty rare situation. A few of their top forwards and look like they could've easily been top 5 picks, but they were late 1st/2nd round picks. Makes sense in this case, they are definitely a bit of a unicorn/black swan/good oiler/etc.

I wasn't saying follow the Dallas model anyway...just saying a player can still contribute even if he is older and overpaid IF you build an actual team around them with top players in their prime.
Sorry Oilers

Or a guy who got away and won the Stanley Cup Sam Bennett joke?
Was there consensus among the thankers of that post? Or were they just actually Casablanca fans
Can’t be.. Bogey never actually said “Play it again, Sam”. Closest he said was “you played it for her, you can play it for me”

Pretty worried about this guy. I see him spending some time in the press box this year and I hope it doesn’t become a problem within the team.

We should probably wait until he plays a real game before the doom and gloom posts

He is my pick for Flames first home goal of the season.
Coleman or Weeger in Vancouver.
