Supporting organizations that fight against drunk driving
It’s honestly been a horrible 24 hours for me (and probably for a lot of people) after hearing the tragic news. RIP Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
I don’t know if this is poor timing but I’m putting a link below for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in hopes that we can support organizations that advocate against impaired driving while also supporting victims of such crimes.
https://madd.ca/pages/
If anyone else can think of other organizations that also advocate against drunk driving, comment below as well.
It’s unfortunate how common these tragedies can happen in everyday life. Let’s work together to at least reduce the frequency of such tragedies…

Next time you see someone who's had more than a single drink and they have car keys in their hand with intent to drive, slap them. punch them. snitch to the police on them. no one should have to through what Guy, Jane, Meredith, Katie, and Kristen Gaudreau must be going through right now.

Yup - that’s my feel too. We all say we would or want to do that; but how many act on it, and do it to a friend that try’s to sway them into doing it?
I’ve been in the situation a few times before. Younger me wasn’t forceful enough. Luckily, nothing came of it.
A few years ago I dug in my heels. My friend was pretty ruthless in the moment and really upset with me. A few other friends didn’t want to get into the middle of it. Stuck my ground. Waited an hour for his gf to pick him up. Yelled at me the whole time. We didn’t talk for 6 months.
He reached out to me eventually, apologized for his behaviour, and thanked me for preventing a bad decision. He was embarrassed in hindsight and why he wouldn’t talk to me. Guy is a really young, smart, successful young man with loads of upside. Good kind heart when sober. He looks up to me now as a mentor of sorts (I’m about 10 years older than him).
It’s one of my proudest moments and love seeing what’s come out of it. Gives me the courage and conviction to stand the ground in these situations.
You think about what happened to Johnny and Matthew. 1 in a million. Billion. I don’t know. But it hurts to know how much was lost over something so silly and preventable. In my situation, my actions probsbly did not prevent anything serious. But damn, what if they did? You never know.
Don’t take the chance. It’s too important. If your friend is mad or resents you as a consequence, well, then that’s there issue. But we’ve all seen this happen and it’s just not worth it.
Take action. Stand up. Lead by example. You just never know when the 1 in a million happens, and I don’t find to find out.

Let's go a little bit farther, next time you see an idiot on their phone driving snitch them out as well, there's more accidents and deaths from distracted drivers than drunk drivers these days.

When the topic comes up amongst old friends of mine, I still get thanks for taking keys away from guys who were about to leave the bar. I did it many times and almost got my head kicked in many times for it. I threw my good buddy’s keys into Gull lake one time because I knew he was going to drive. It took a long time for him to get over it but it’s all good now.

Talk them out of it, call a ride for them, let them sleep on your sofa, or call the police if nothing else works.
Advocating that people commit assault is very irresponsible and will land anyone who does so in jail.

Yup. While I appreciate the focus on DUI, we could all make far more impactful changes by thinking more critically and adjusting our own driving habits. Every trip. Every where.

Not once you take away the wheel which will come at some point. The sooner this technology gets pushed over the line the better.

IMO this is much more than DUI. It is the entitlement and ultra aggressive culture that seems to be accepted by society.
Whenever my teen son is cycling on the highway or back roads even in groups I am worried about something like this because many people are horrible on the roads.
Then in Royal oak this afternoon while waiting at the turn light I also saw three 55+ cyclists this afternoon going straight from cycle pathway without slowing or looking riding across the small cross walk at Country hills Blvd at Royal birch Blvd. the 3rd almost got hit but the SUV saw at last moment.
Society has become so inattentive or aggressive on the roads.

This is the cyclists fault. They are vehicles and aren't supposed to be using the crosswalk without WALKING.

I drive all over this province and city and 70% of people are on their phones....even if not in their hands it's being poked away at on thier dash holders .
People are already generally bad drivers then add cells, Booze. ....oh and the ones on Bluetooth are hand talking freaks throwing up gang signs swerving all over the place.
10 and 2 MFers . Let's all get home safe to our families.
Statistical proof that distracted driving
Drivers who text are eight times likelier to be involved in a crash or near-crash compared to non-distracted drivers.
Distracted driving causes more fatal collisions than impaired driving in some parts of Canada.

You can ride through a crosswalk, you just can't expect the ROW.
But then again whenever I do dismount it is quite rare that motorists yield to me. A lot of the slip lanes in this city are horror shows to use as a pedestrian.

as much as drunk driving is a real problem, the amount of aggressive driving is out of control, many times guys in big trucks. Would be nice to see the cops get off their ass*s on the side of the road and actually drive around, these guys arent tough to spot. that a different subject i guess but i am tired of these idiots.
