There has to be rules in place for any type of deferment, no? Meaning pretty sure you couldn't defer for 40 years or some such nonesense.

In theory you could defer for 40 years, but hockey players, like most people, prefer to get their money while they are still young enough to enjoy it.
Besides, think about what dollars were worth 40 years ago compared to today. Are you sure a dollar 40 years from now will even be worth the trouble of collecting?

Again, Frank is thinking he is clever, becuase Shohei Ohtani manages to defer $68M per year for 10 years from 2033 to 2043 on his MLB contract, and only gets paid $2M in salary for the next 10 years.
NHL and CRA probably have a different idea and rules, and 40 years is ludicrous, but that's Frank and the desperate ends he and the Oilers are going through, in advance of one, and probably both top players leaving in the next 34 months.

Would love for Draisaitl’s agent to announce tomorrow that the oilers ran out of time and negotiations will be on hold until the end of the season. Would be pretty funny.

How is this possible, all i hear is how so many players want to go there for discount contracts. that must be true, the media who are always unbias report it all the time. Leon is probably trying to convince them he should sign for league min, thus the hold up

If the contract is over, what is preventing the team from just not paying the deferred money? If the original contract enforces the deferred payments, how is it not longer than 8 years?

Nobody wants money late they want it early...someone explain to Frank how investments work. There is a reason these guys like signing bonuses.

There's a difference between the Jarvis contract where he earns a signing bonus the day after his contract expires. And a insane contract where you defer over 40 years like these Oiler fools seem to think is possible.
I have my doubts that the league would approve a 40 year 33 million dollar deferment as its basically a blatant cap circumvention.
What they might not be able to stop is Katz making Draisaitl a spokes person for his drug store line and paying him outside of his NHL contract. But I'm pretty sure that league would go against that, because frankly the big market teams would go all in on it as a way to get around the cap, and we would be in a position of seeing the smaller market teams throwing up their hands and muttering screw this.
Also it wouldn't stop the Leafs for example from offering McDofus a league maximum contract plus a 40 year job as a grocery store stock boy at another 3 million bucks a year.
I doubt the league would allow the deferred contract, and even if they did the league would retaliate by constantly monitoring Kane's health with the own doctors to deny the wink wink strategy of keeping Kane off of the ice until the playoffs.

The terms of the contract would prevent it.
The playing time under the contract would be over, not the payment time under the contract.

Well, you are correct, but it also protects them from lockouts.

He will gladly postpone his money for the cup(s)
Frank should ask himself if he would do that in Drai's shoes. I think the answer will be clear.
What a maroon.

Definitely. He's getting that sweet, sweet Stanley Cup discount to stay in Dumpsterville for the next 8 years of his life. His fiance is absolutely thrilled.

If everyone wants to take a discount to play with the mighty Oil and their Lord and Saviour, then how did they get themselves into this cap crunch?

I would love for a resident Capologist to chime in, but I am quite certain that the cap hit is the total contract $ divided by the years of the contract.
Max years is 8. There are no side deals or ‘winks’ allowed. This was to counteract back-diving contracts, which this essentially is.
I don’t mind Frank. His outlandish takes are regularly closer to the truth, than otherwise, but this one is a bridge to far.
He’s F=NG on this one.
