I am very very sad. This is so upsetting on many levels.

My mind also wandered into the “what if-parallel universe scenarios” yesterday. Maybe psychologists find that more common than we think?

This is going to hurt for a very long time.

You do have the actual contract. It's a standard player contract. No player contract is permitted to deviate from the specimen contract included in the CBA. The only permissible variations are for salary, signing bonus, individual bonuses (if permitted), and any NTC or NMC (if permitted). Everything else is required to be bog standard.

It really is unbelievable that we've seen the last of him and all of his magic is a matter of history.

Needs to be memorialized in multiple ways. Retire his number, make that huge chalk 13 on the memorial a permanent fixture, and a statue at the new grounds with his arms above his head. Would serve as a potent reminder for those leaving the new arena and getting behind the wheel.

In a sad way, this has been the best of CP in a long time.
I’m living in Vancouver and wore 13 all day and even at work. A lot of people would stop and talk to me, others would show appreciation for wearing the name.

It’s not just Calgary that’s grieving it’s a whole nation, the one below us and the entirety of the hockey world. The amount of people that have come together is really something special.

Made it down. I'm glad we did. Definitely helped.
It's beautifully quiet and respectful down there.

Not sure how to post pics so here's my TweetX post: https://x.com/ZAKtalksTECH/status/18...55oYE2aEA&s=19

Weird to say outloud… but I’m almost surprised at how sad I am about this.

So we know that the Blue Jackets are required to pay out the remainder of the money owed to Johnny. The contract is guaranteed unless Johnny broke its terms, like the morality clause. Getting killed by an idiot is not a reason to void that obligation. You can’t void that obligation if a player gets injured, unless he was involved in an activity prohibited by that contract.

I reached out to someone who was in town and going to the wedding. He said he is utterly devastated, which is likely an understatement. One of the guys close to the family, has the same name as the guy who killed the Gaudreaus. There is no relation between the two, but it is causing some hardships for the one who didn’t murder two people and causing some confusion in town around the incident. Rumours can get out of hand quickly.

I don't know if it's been posted, but my wife said that she read on Twitter/X that they were apparently biking home from their sister's rehearsal dinner.

I think differently. This was a death outside of the hockey arena. I'm sure there will be a lot of players who want to get going and back into their regular routine playing hockey. It helps with the grief. I think with the start of the season, it will help a lot of fans as well.

Yeah I mean it's obvious they were on a brotherly ride around the old grounds on the eve of their sister's wedding. Supposed to be something joyful and nostalgic and some idiot just needs to get around one car in the stupidest way possible. Absolute fool.

Who in the flying #### tries to overtake a car - which is already driving in a southbound lane while going north bound - by trying to pass on the right hand side.

Like what the ####. clearly a drunk driver but what a shame.

This dbag would have prob tried the same move even if he wasn't drunk.

I'm still kinda numb. Can't really talk about Johnny without tearing up.

I refuse to watch anything with that idiot in it, can you please NSFW it for those of us who don’t want to look at his dumb mug, it puts me in a bad mood sadly.

Sorry not trying to be a dink.

This was more than lapse in judgment it very likely (as we do not personally know him), but more likely his regular ultra aggressive #### behaviour. He can pose for US Armed forces Covid-19 vaccination shots back then... on balance of probabilities he is like this all the time looking at the video being told he is being held multiple days in jail. He should not see outside a prison as he will do similar things and would be a menace

I agree, it's too soon to see video/mugs of the guy responsible.

I don't know why people think it's a good idea to post that and rile up the masses. Yeah, look he's a ####. Unsurprising. But what does that accomplish? It was posted immediately after the tragic news on a lot of outlets on social media too.

I guess that's the culture now online. Triggering people into a rage no matter how inappropriate or inappropriately timed the content is.

Wish we had a little more tact/sensibility with these things. There's a process to mourning.. let if unfold the right way.

Saw the rumors Thursday night and woke up Friday to hear the confirmed bad news. I'm in my 40's and not one to be star struck my athletes or celebrities (I've coached little league with a former MLB players & never once hounded them for an autograph etc). News like this is normally something I'm able to say "that's sad" and move on with my day.

This one hit me really hard, I've not cried like this over someone I didn't know on a personal level. I wasn't sad just because he was a good hockey player, rather by all accounts a good person, a dad and having such a tight knit family.

Maybe losing another Calgary legend (Buck Shot) recently contributed as well.

I don't know if it was the circumstances around his sister's wedding, the fact that they were on bicycles (I've been hit twice and no longer ride) or the fact that there are now 3 kids that will never know their dad's. A stupid selfish act with such a wide swath of destruction. Sad for Sean Monohan who signed in Columbus to be reunited with his best friend and their kids can grow up together.

I just can't imagine how their loved ones move on. Such a horrible tragedy that transcends hockey.....

Injured and killed are not the same thing.

As GioforPM correctly points out, an employment contract is ended by the death of the employee. The money is guaranteed only in the case of a hockey-related injury.

If a player's death did not break the contract, there would be no need for the CBA to have a clause requiring insurance to pay the survivors.
