One nice aspect I noticed - at the start, I'm on an actual road bike lane (15th Ave) for a few blocks to get to the pathways. I'm always respectful and leave lots of room for cars to pass, which they carefully do. But last night in my jersey, they wouldn't come anywhere near me despite ample room, just drove slowly behind me at a good distance. I'm pretty sure I could've bladed down the middle of Macleod Trail last night, and vehicles would just go 20 km/h far behind me.

Hopefully this raised awareness about respectfully sharing the road with alternative modes of transport in designated areas sticks from this (and also raised DUI awareness), such a senseless tragedy. RIP Johnny and Matthew, it's still surreal.
This is a pretty crazy visual. Let’s make it happen

You’d probably need some sort of permit but what about an annual bike ride in celebration of Johnny, bike safety, and not drinking and driving. Wear your Gaudreau jersey and bike/blade down to the Dome. Any donations/proceeds to Kidsport, MADD, or some other charity. If the memorial at the Dome is any indication, I think there could be a lot of support for something like this.

As for the date, Johnny’s birthday is August 13. It lands on a Wednesday next year, but that’s okay. Who’s in?

Well, some of the contract stuff was just about what happens for the family. And no one was arguing, just working through the CBA and insurance knowledge of various people.

If you mean the contract negotiation stuff, yeah.

I'd be 100% down with that

Seeing those pictures makes the reality of what happened hit even harder than it did yesterday. He's really gone. This actually happened. Those kids are really going to have to grow up without their dads. Their moms have suddenly lost the loves of their lives. And what should have been their sister's happiest day of her life was instead an unimaginable nightmare come true.

This feeling is so awful, and it's hard to fathom what the Gaudreau family is going through considering it's many, many times worse than what we are feeling.

It's hard to find words at a time like this.

People should organize a bike ride in the city, wearing JG gear. Such a senseless tragedy. I wish I was in Calgary right now. So sad.

Has Craig Conroy released a statement? I know he had a special relationship with Johnny.

I'm heading down to Nationwide Arena with my mom right now. Bought some skittles and purple Gatorade with me to leave at the memorial. Will post pics later

I suspect we won't see one from him for a long while. If there's one human in the Flames org that's going to take this devastation hardest, it's going to be Conny. Johnny was his boy.

I haven't posted about Johnny's death, words fail me.

But if I could thanks this 100 times over I would.

We can't bring him back, and nothing they'll do to the scumbag that killed him will seem adequate, but I think this would be a fitting tribute.

I wanted to hear Conroy talk about John, was waiting for that yesterday.

Must have a boatload of good stories.

That is such a great idea and would help raise awareness around the issue.

Ideally would love it to be coordinated in all the cities he played in on the same day or something like that.

I really miss Calgary right now.
I think the way the community has come together around this and on CP is different than I'd see in Vancouver.

Have really appreciated some of the open sharing posters have put here too about their own tragedies; losing spouses, kids, siblings etc. That can't be easy to share with strangers online.
In a sad way, this has been the best of CP in a long time.

17th ave & 8th st SW to start (meet in the park), all the way down the red mile and finish at the saddle dome stairs? I know it’s a super short route but seems like a fitting ride.

I feel the same way being in Regina. I have this unexplainable pull to want to be back in Calgary and go to the Dome memorial. My wife doesn't quite understand, but my son and I are grieving in a weird way, and it would be nice to be around the community that feels the same way

A few posts up I suggested MADD and/or Kidsport — Johnny worked with them during his time here. I know when Johnny left people talked about how his legacy with the Flames wouldn’t be fully realized. But having heard all the tributes that have come out about Johnny the person, maybe his actual legacy will not just be about his hockey achievements.

You don’t have to come here. I do hear ya. My wife thinks I’m being ridiculous.

Calgary loves the Giners
