1000%. He made an enormous impact on this city and franchise for a decade and is one of the most electrifying talents we've ever seen here. Never let that 13 get worn again.

Breaks my heart to think of his wife and two young kids having to deal with losing their Dad/husband in such an awful way.
####, what a terrible day for that family.

Retire 13. That man is and always will be a Flame.

This is gut wrenching, terrible news.

A statue of Johnny's reaction immediately after that Game 7 OT winner against Dallas would encapsulate everything that made this City adore him.

Devastating. How absolutely horrific for the family on the eve of a wedding celebration. Jane and Guy were wholly adopted by this community and the pain they must be experiencing right now is beyond what most, perhaps any of us, can comprehend.

Two brothers eagerly awaiting tomorrow just out for a bike ride, taken in the prime of their lives by 1 (if not more) poor lapse in judgement by a single motorist.

My Condolensces to any kin or kindred frequenting this message board, we all ache for your loss

Woke up several times in the middle of the night to check what’s going on. This is so heartbreaking

Man... regardless of how things went down that lead to him leaving, Johnny was one of the more electric players on the Flames since Iginla. RIP Johnny Hockey, I hope that there are plenty of ham and cheese sandwiches where you are buddy.

Our deepest condolences, so terrible for the Gaudreau family. Life can be so unfair and unexpected.

13 in the rafters forever. Such a magician on the ice and so many great memories.

We must all cherish life because we don't know what is waiting for us around the corner.

Rest in peace, Johnny. Your family is in our hearts. We mourn with them.

Statement from NJ State Police:

Troopers responded to a motor vehicle crash at 8:19 p.m. on County Route 551 North, milepost 11.1 Oldmans Township, Salem County. Based on a preliminary investigation, two pedalcyclists, John M. Gaudreau, a 31-year-old male from Carneys Point, N.J., and Matthew R. Gaudreau, a 29-year-old male from Pedricktown, N.J., were traveling north on County Route 551, close to the fog line of the roadway. Sean M. Higgins, a 43-year-old male from Woodstown, N.J., was traveling north on CR 551 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee behind a sedan and SUV. Higgins attempted to pass the slower-moving sedan and SUV, entered the southbound lanes of travel, passed the slower-moving sedan, and attempted to re-enter the northbound lanes of travel when the SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes to safely pass the two pedalcyclist traveling north on the right side of the roadway. Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right and struck the two pedalcyclists in the rear. As a result of the collision, the two pedalcyclists sustained fatal injuries. Through further investigation, Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, charged with two counts of death by auto, and lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility. This crash remains an active investigation, and no additional information is available.

I followed this intensely throughout last night, and sincerely hoped that it was some elaborate hoax and I would wake up to positive news this morning. But in my heart, I knew that wasn’t the case. Can’t say I’ve ever been impacted by a “celebrity” death like this one. I never had the pleasure of meeting his brother, but I met Johnny, as he was an absolute class act. He was humble and an absolute magician on the ice. I was devastated when he left but I respected his reasoning to be closer to family. I’m grateful he had that time the past few years, I will keep his family in my thoughts. Never before has the family of a hockey player endeared themselves to an entire city like the Gaudreaus did and I am absolutely wrecked at the thought of what they’re going through right now. They’re genuinely fantastic people and no family should ever have to go through something like this. They will be missed.

Was never shy with my opinion on him over the years but this is way beyond the game. He had a family and loved ones. RIP Johnny
