As a Zary fan I also think 7x7 is ridiculous at this point. I would be comfortable with a 7x5.5 for the risk reward but 7x7 is just too much.

Hopefully no PTOs. Really no reason to do that this season with young players ready to prove themselves.

I could see one or two tweeners on PTOs, on the understanding that they are really in camp to provide some insurance for the Wranglers. I imagine the farm could use a veteran centre to replace Brett Sutter.

I wouldn't mind a couple of undrafted rookie invites trying out for pro contracts that start with the Wranglers. Oliver Tulk seemed to have a decent camp last year. I also wouldn't mind someone like Jake Sloan. He had a decent camp last year with the no goods and might have some upside.

Yup, I'm always excited to see the undrafted juniors.

I thought you need PTO’s to make the young guys hungry! Wtf. Camp roster make up and strategy by now should be rote. I like no PTO’s but assumed Treliving had the “I got this” vibe.

No one is saying give him that now.
But what if he posts a 60 point season and shows he can play centre? 7x7 is completely reasonable at that point.

If you are paying rfa's you are always going to hit on some and not others, but I would rather do that than pay out to ufa's that have very little potential to be better than what you have seen, unlike younger rfa's.
Of course in any rebuild you eventually need to add in a few ufa's to round out the team, but not until later on.

But there is no real reason to bridge quality young players, more often than not they will out produce their contract value.
|
Because Calgary was about to lose control of the player due to his pending UFA. It was a risk they needed to take, either sign with term or lose him. Their contracts are not comparable.
Now if Zary gets 60 points, by all means sign him with term. But don’t compare the contracts.

I like this approach. There will be invariably be capable players on waivers that can fill spots if our guys aren’t quite ready. Other teams out there might try to sneak guys through waivers which we can pounce on (wahlstrom, for example) if guys aren’t quite ready yet.
Side note. Nick Robertson in news again. What would appetite be for a Pelletier for Robertson swap? Tre would probably value him higher than other teams given that he drafted him. Robertson would be motivated and wanting to prove Toronto that they made a mistake, but would have to play higher up in lineup. Pelletier probably more all around player but Robertson has a higher ceiling offensively.

If Toronto moves Robertson (who is not waiver exempt), it likely won't be for a player who is also not waiver exempt, unless he's a sure bet to crack the lineup.
Tre likely knows Pelletier well, which is likely not helpful. He would need to make the team.

This approach makes sense this year. There are not a lot of open spots available this year. Combine that with that for the first time in a long time you got a good 6-7 players that are already on the cusp of making the nhl. I see one open spot in forward and maybe a battle to take down Rooney for 4th line center. Defence looks even harder with the amount we all ready have signed.
As for the Zary conversation , for me it all comes down what position do they see him at goi g forward. If you’re talking winger I’m not handing out a 7x7. If they think he could be a 50-60 point everyday 2nd line center then I’m thinking that’s a good idea. I really hope he ends up being a top 6 center. We don’t have much in the pipeline at center spot.

Do you think Zary will be a better player this year? I think it's likely - and I think he'll also get a shot at centre. Can he produce 15-25% more points? Monahan damn near doubled his production from NHL Y1 to NHL Y2...
|
I'd be careful with Zary and Pospisil when it comes to sophomore seasons.
The team lost key defensemen for transition, and that duo (along with Kadri) had the best puck luck of any skaters on the team last year.

I wouldn't pay Zary that much, he is likely our 3rd line Center in 2 to 3 years, he is likely not going to be playing with top 6 talent after this year and his point production likely drops as he gets less minutes and more checking roles. We draft our 1st line center in 2025-26 and that guy is likely playing 2C behind Kadri that either his draft year or in 2026-27, Kadri probably moves to 2C in 27-28. If Zary ends up being our 2C that would be wonderful but not sure we would know that after a 60 point season this year when he is getting minutes he likely doesn't get in 1 to 2 years.

No, because they already are one. Both Pachal and Hanley were claimed off waivers.

If Zary gets 50 points i will be ecstatic. I think that 60 ish is his absolute ceiling unless he's playing with a really dynamite player. He reminds me a lot of Daymond Langkow.
I wouldn't go for 7 on him until he puts up 2 seasons at the 60ish level. Maybe you argue he'll do that and you take the gamble if he grows to 50+ next season, but IMO it's not a great bet.
It's still a success for a late first to become a play driving 60 point second line player. That's nothing to be mad or disappointed about. In fact, that's exactly what Zary was projected to be on best upside when we drafted him.

Obviously all this Zary contract extension chatter is premature as there's a lot of 'ifs' about the output of the upcoming season... but, if he truly is that young 25G, 50P player, would Owen Tippet be a good comparable at $6.2 x 8 (I don't watch the Flyers much)???
