No problem here with canceling it and bringing back regular hockey in overtime.

I would say remove the points system but the NHL is unique. The rules change in OT and you have a skills competition.

So you have to be good at something to make the playoffs that doesn't matter in the playoffs. It's absurd.

5 v 5 OT doesn’t work.
4 v 4 for 5 mins and 3 v 3 for the remainder until you have a winner with 5 minute periods.

Either you force a win like you described and count up the wins at the end of the year, or you play real hockey and accept that some games will be drawn, then award each team half the points.
Both options get rid of the absurdity of one game being worth more than another and rewarding teams for losing close games.

Even changing the point system is a hard one. You will have coaches who clamp it down with a 1-0 lead to get the 3 points in regulation.
I know it sounds exciting and teams will push for a win in regulation but it could be counter productive.

They should be clamping it down with a 1-0 lead. The goal is to win, which gets devalued by the other team getting anything when they lose and defrauds the rest of the league that a "3-point game" happened that they couldn't do anything about.

If they don't change the standings by much, why not get rid of them?

Abolish the shootout and you won't have that problem.
The only reason I ever watch a shootout is because I have already invested three hours of my life in the damn game, and I want to know how it finishes even if they settle it with a glorified tiddlywinks competition.

Just do away with overtime in the regular season altogether. There is nothing at all wrong with ties.

I'm just going to toss out a silly idea, because I haven't seen this suggested before:
5-on-5 overtime with no substitutions. Whoever starts in OT remains on the ice for the duration.
Play continues until somebody makes a bad play from sheer fatigue and the puck goes in.

Some masterminds decided that winning in overtime should be worth exactly 2x more than losing in overtime. Not 1.0825x, not 12x, but 2x. Why? It's completely ambiguous and the worst thing about hockey to me.
We lost by one goal = you lost.
Yeah but we only took two penalties = you lost.
Yeah but we played a very entertaining style = you lost.
Yeah but we packed the house on the road = you lost.
Yeah but we were playing back-to-back games = you lost.
Yeah but we lost in overtime = You DID?! Wow! That's half as good as winning! Here's a point!

I mean Basketball kind of does that. Unless you get up big in OT and you sub the bench players. It’s easier to settle a basketball game.
Hockey is difficult, it’s hard to score. You need that open ice. It’s not the Best but having gimmicks in the regular is probably the easiest way to settle the game. And no ties suck, I’m not investing myself in a game for it to end in a tie.

The most popular sport in the world has ties, and plenty of them.

League average GAA last year was 2.91 so even while there is a goalie in net, they're scoring once every 10.3 minutes while being able to change. If they can't change it will likely be faster than that.

I really don't recall any pre-lockout clamor for an end to tie games. When you got your 1 point back then, it was earned; you took it away from the other team, or they felt like they took one from you. It was not a pity point.

They also settle the final with penalties.
It’s not perfect. The NHL won’t be perfect. Let’s just be happy they don’t have 3v3 and shootouts in the playoffs.

You compete to win not take a point away.
Ties are dumb.
Soccer is the hardest sport to score in. At least with hockey you can toss it at the net and it can bounce off someone’s ass and go in. You never know a guy like Nurse loves blocks shots with his ass.
