The hot spots are never in the high rise area. I was just in Tokyo and the best places to go were low rise.

They don’t
Just in terms of drinking areas, Seoul has hongdae and Itaewan. Both busy areas for nightlife. The buildings in those areas are generally less than 5 stories high
In Japan, as shopping streets, you have tanaka, Chazawa-dori, cat street, Togoshi Ginza. All with low rise buildings. Drinking culture is different and much more hidden in Tokyo.
The most popular areas in these cities to hangout are almost all low rise areas
Even in Calgary. The difference between 17th and Stephen ave is stark. A sunny Saturday is far more desirable on 17

I doubt 17th or Inglewood will turn into wall to wall high rises.

And then there's the business reality - new, tall, shiny buildings demand significantly higher rents than the older, human scaled ones least they kill their valuations. Which is why you get TD Bank, A&W, and other Corporate owned tenants instead of that awesome new indie retailer that generates foot traffic.
The SimCity jockey types think it's as simple as penciling in some fine grained retail CRU's on the ground floor of a 30 story condo to activate the street - forgetting this basic reality of business.

I keep saying it! We need to invest in Hobbit cities under the ground until we can master the craft of cities under water!
You need to walk before you can run and then...I guess swim?

I already said in the Water thread that we should pump Moraine Lake dry, then we can build a City there and then we re-fill it with all natural Mountain Glacier water and we can establish our own Mountain Lake Atlantis.
Two birds fish, one stone! Thats 4D chess!

This is not about opening/closing businesses but I suspect that the Hi-5 burger place downtown is a front for money laundering or something. I've never seen anyone order from there even during the busy lunch rush. I've never even seen anyone work there as you have to press a button to get someone to come to the counter. I saw a lady there for the first time at lunch yesterday and she was waiting to order. I don't know if she rang the bell but by the time I walked up she had given up waiting and walked away. What a strange place.

Look here you! The Sea occupies an unconscionable amount of Real Estate and its time we started taking it back!
This is our world dammit and we should be able to occupy as we damned well see fit!
Sea-life can move over!

I am fairly sure its not. I know one of the owners. Its from the Dinner Deluxe group with Mike Pigot.
I actually like their burgers, but never can find time to make it down.

I met that guy and he's a lying bastard.
He was rather delicious though, so he's got that going for him, which is nice...or rather...'had' that going for him...

Yeah, that was a dumb take.
I've been to the location in the first street market a few times and they make a tasty burger!

Maybe first street market is a lot better but the downtown location is dead. Every other food joint in the building has a lineup of people waiting for food at lunch and this place is so dead that they have a sign on the container to push the doorbell for service. How they survive is questionable and I wouldn't be surprised if they are just waiting out their current lease.

Spotted a new hamburger place called Vera's Burger Shack in the new Northland Village redevelopment. Looked pretty busy, but couldn't go in. Anybody give it a try?
