Nothing's tastier than Frank admitting he didn't know something.

Seravalli
May 29: Frank Seravalli from DailyFaceoff.com believes Draisaitl will remain an Oiler for a long time. Yeah I don’t see it (Draisaitl leaving) and I don’t really understand the hysteria and buzz around it because I’ve always viewed these two players as a package deal. There’s only one place that Draisaitl can play with the best player on planet Earth, and it’s here in Edmonton. It’s going to be hard to envision those two separating from each other.
Jun 14: Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff, his prediction that the Edmonton Oilers will sign up Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard, paying $40 million per year for all. Where else are you going to go to play with Connor McDavid? He’s not going anywhere.
Aug 13: “The sense that I’ve gotten in talking to people close to it is that the end result, the end number may end up surprising people a little bit in terms of how reasonable it ends up being,” Seravalli said
Aug 27: "On a money basis, AAV, I think these two sides are a little further apart than I envisioned."

I never bought the narrative that Drysaddle was going to take a discount - it just seems so ridiculous that he's going to sign for $1-$1.5M AAV less to stay in Edmonton when he's already been grossly underpaid relative to his peers for several years.

"a little further apart than I envisioned"
In other words, his prior reports, his 'insider information', was nothing more than his own (water carrying) opinion

Who could imagine that after nearly a decade of winning nothing in Edmonton, while playing with the best player on the planet, that maybe he wants to jump ship and go play in San Jose, for instance, and be the guy driving the ship out of their rebuild with a boatload of good young talent around him? If I'm him and the Sharks are offering a similar or better deal, I'm all over it without a second thought.
The Oilers and some of the fans and media seem to be missing the one key component of players like Leon wanting to stay and "chase cups" and that means actually winning something before you start beating the drum of excellence. Without any cups you strip it down to simply playing in a dump of a city, with terrible taxes, too much media attention, terrible weather and terrible travel. The days are really long in the summer though.

Frank's own previous statements at times were a bit contradicting though. First I remember him saying the "Oilers will slide over a blank cheque". And then even his number in the previous message was something like "They will spend $40M for all 3", which doesn't really speak to a discount for any of the players.
I think if they give McDavid $15.5M, Draisaitl $14.5M, and Bouchard $10M and spend $40M total then they probably could get all three signed but doesn't sound like that's the plan.
I think Frank's assumption might have been "Oilers will pay whatever required to keep these guys", but the narrative coming out of local media, and the team themselves has changed since Bowman got there. There narrative is now "these guys need to take a discount to stay and win in Edmonton".
Which to me means the Oilers are playing with fire.
Draisaitl doesn't seem like the type who would react well to what he would see as a low ball offer...and if they are offering him $12M I don't think he's going to like that.
And if you let Draisaitl walk or move him...then I think that just increases the odds of McDavid not extending there.

I'm elated that they picked up Bowman if that's true.
The blank cheque approach would've probably got them 2 of 3
Hardball for discounts means I think they could be left with Bouchard while the other two seek greener pastures after running out the clock.

If you’re Evan boo boo then this is probably going to work out well. You can take the nurse overpayment comparable contract when presented, or you can wait to see what the glitter twins do, or you can use the desperation around the Oilers to drive the contract even higher, or even get a short term deal if you must to get to UFA even faster.
I think that the blank cheque approach would get all 3 deals done, but it wouldn’t leave a lot for everyone else. And even max term max money won’t make any difference if the player has emotionally checked out and wants to go elsewhere.
Draisatl’s agent should already know what contracts pissy could get on the open market in 10 months. Pissy may not get another contract after this one, so no one can miss the opportunity for maximum. $12 isn’t going to get this done.
On serivalli, is there any reason to think that pissy’s opening position wouldn’t be max/max? Why would they start at anything else?

It would be hilarious if, before the season starts, draisaitl notifies them he’s not signing and going to free agency
Who ends up getting fired?

No one- they would blame it on Holland.

"discounts to win multiple cups"
they are all getting massive raises and won no cups on their old deals...what does it matter if its not the absolute max contract they could have got on the market the team will have less cap to spend elsewhere and be worse. Oh and they lost their top 2 prospects.

What a shock, Draisaitl does not want to do a team friendly deal. Frankie re-doing his math, what does the team look like with Draisaitl at 14.8 million a year?

As much fun as it would be to see them moan and cry all season, announcing that just after the TDL would be better.

Elliotte Friedman reports that:
If newly acquired Ty Emberson plays fewer than 50 games, he will be an unrestricted free agent. But the Oilers like him, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
If emberson plays up the lineup, he’s going to get paid because they can’t give him 50 plus games and not re-sign him.
Or he’s a bust and doesn’t get 50 games in.
Or he’s going to have to submit to the veteran’s discount scheme to help pay for baby Connor’s new dress shoes.
