- Hanifin
- Lindholm
- Markstrom
- Zadorov
- Mangiapane
We have replaced those guys with ... Mantha and Bean.
This is a bottom 7- or 8- team, and very likely bottom 4. They'll try hard and be entertaining but you cannot be in the top 2/3rds of the NHL with this D and goaltending.
|
We also had career years for Coleman, Sharangovich, Hanifin was on pace to tie his career best, Weegar had a career year.
I can't see Weegar and Coleman combing for 50 goals next season. The drop off may be covered by Kuzmenko, but we will see.

Agree on the bold. Also, the D combined for 52 goals in total - they won't be doing that this year.
Some of those goals should be made up by Kuzmenko. And Mantha likely exceeds Mangiapane's 14 from last year.
Overall though, I would think they will score fewer goals than last year (when they were 18th). And to a greater extent, I think their goals against will be a fair margin worse than the 23rd they were last year

I still think Kylington will circle back once he realizes nobody else is offering a 2+ year deal.
Weegar - Miromanov
Kylington - Andersson
Bahl - Pachal
Bean - Solovoyov
Hanley waived before the start of the season
Huberdeau - Sharangovich - Mantha
Zary - Kadri - Kuzmenko
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
Pelletier - Pospisil - Lomberg
Rooney
Duehr / Hunt waived
I do think we potentially see a trade for a center still...but feels like one of the forwards would be going the other way if that happens. And I'll be honest I don't think that lineup is anywhere close to as bad as what Chicago and San Jose ran out last year...I'll be surprised if it's a bottom 3 finish for the Flames...likely more in that 5-9 range again.

Zary also had 14 as a rookie, lets see what his sophomore season looks like sometimes players slump.

Assuming that Kylington is gone for good, I'd roll with this:
Weegar-Andersson
Bahl-Miromanov
Bean-Pachal
Solovyov
Trot out Weegar-Andersson for 23-24 minutes per game and have the other two pairs split the remaining 37-38 minutes.
Or maybe Huska takes a page of the Tourigny and Euro playbook by rolling seven defensemen a game to limit the minutes for all defensemen not named Weegar/Andersson, as well as prevent certain players from being over-exposed.

Fun fact - two of these guys had 1:1 time with Danielle Fujita today
When group 1 was on, Coronato was on the other rink working 1:1 with her for the full hour . When group 2 was on, Solovyov was working with her

Glad we finally found an effective use for Huberdeau - to help us get above the cap floor - with the Flames now having the most cap space in the entire NHL. Connie has a solution for every problem on this team!

True, but Trev signed Huberdeau, so that is his win.

Was thinking about the roster for the season and realized how few spots are available for young players at this point - at least at forward positions. I know it’s a long season and there will be injuries but it felt like there has been so much roster turnover over the last 2 years that there would be tons of spots available for young guys. When I look at the lineup below, I don’t see a top 9 forward position available and I see two 4th line forward positions available (where I have Klapka and Stromgren). Not a criticism, just an observation that the starting lineup will have more veterans than you would think in a rebuild year.
Kuzmenko-Kadri-Posposil
Huberdeau-Zary-Sharangovich
Mantha-Backlund-Coleman
Lomberg-Rooney-Klapka/Stromgren
Bean-Weegar
Bahl-Anderson
Soloviov-Miromanov/Pachal
Vladar
Wolf
The only way I see this shuffling around to make more room for another top 9 spot for a young player like Coronato or Pelletier is if Posposil is shifted to centre on the fourth line. If that happens, there will be one less position available for a fourth line player and one more position available for a top nine player. I just think the coach likes having Posposil with Kadri as he brings a great element to the top nine.
I’m certain injuries will happen even as early as pre-season. But, if not, I don’t see a spot for Pelletier or Coronato on the opening lineup.

I cannot see a scenario where Pelletier goes down and they lose him for nothing. Pretty sure Stromgrem starts in the minors. The Flames will also have no problem I suspect sending Rooney to the minors.

Agreed. I see something along these lines:
Kuzmenko-Kadri-Sharongovich
Huberdeau-Zary-Mantha
Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman
Lomberg-Pospisil-Klapka
Rooney/Hunt
Bean-Weegar
Bahl-Anderson
Soloviov-Miromanov
Pachal
Vladar
Wolf
So a place for Pelletier, Klapka, Solo and Wolf as rookies.
After the trade deadline, or due to injuries I would expect Coronato to be on the team as well, as well as Pospisil moving up the lineup.

I think if Pelletier doesn't outright make the team, the Flames will trade him for a 3rd in pre-season.

I could see them exploring a trade, but they'd be awfully lucky to get a 3rd for him at this point.

Yeah I agree. He's an awkward fit in the NHL. Undersized lacking an attribute that he's particularly great at.
On the surface it's not shaking out to be a great pick. But then looking at that draft, there is shockingly few interesting names after him. You've got a lot of really flawed players, some with higher ceilings (Kaliyev, Hoglander), some not-bad depth guys (Beecher), but nothing that stands out as an obvious guy they should have picked instead.
Not a great draft once you get outside the top 15. Pretty cruddy actually.
