I think thats sort of the crux of the issue really.
If it was just the arena sound, I could probably swing that, no way I'd convince my wife to watch that.
The Play-by-Play and colour guys are important. I want someone who is going to call the play and maybe inform me of things that I cant see from TV as well as intimate knowledge of the game, maybe tell me something I dont know.
But I'm pretty forgiving too. When he first started I HATED Loubardious. Now? I'd take him in a heartbeat. That guy was awesome, I met him a couple times, he just bleeds hockey. Such and great guy and I got used his calls and really liked them!
Sometimes people just need a chance.

I used to own a beautiful historic home in Aylmer. Nice little town. I even had Cheese visit me there back in the day.

Can somebody explain what the problem with Wills is? I don't typically listen to the Fan960 unless it's a game, and I think he's fine....

Sometimes Wills is offputtingly optometric, so much so that he scoffs and looks down on anyone who thinks otherwise. I think his actual play by play is pretty good and overall I think he's fine. Tough to compare him to someone like Maher, but that's not exactly fair.

Wills to me equals snobby homerism. and extremely misguided homerism a lot of the time.
His calls on the air are fine. which is all that matter unless youre actively trying to consume all available flames content, then you get to hear the Derek Wills opinions and the Snobbyness of those opinions on SN960
As for the new T.V guy, good stuff. Glad they found someone.

Wills play by play is pretty good IMO, but the goal calls I don't really enjoy.
The pieces he does on the radio between games just aren't that enjoyable, it's just not what he is good at.
I said this before when it happened, but was listening to a Flames game on Tune In. The game was in San Jose and I happened to be in San Fran so maybe because of the geofencing I was getting no commercials, just Wills and Mikkelson on hot mikes the entire game. Wills was far more realistic in some of his off air comments, never crude or inappropriate but certainly critical at points. Which was kind of refreshing honestly.

I'm pretty indifferent to home town PBP guys. If they are technically good to the point that I can be in the kitchen making dinner and listening on my headphones, and have a good mental picture of what is happening, then I'm happy.
For the most part these days, when I am watching, I usually have the game on mute and have music or something else playing in the background.

How about an AI version of Bob Cole? Hell....I'd take me some Ed Whalen if they could make that happen.
Just kidding. This guy is better than Wills....slightly better than Kerr. I miss ol RobKerr but mostly Pete.

the best voices ever Whalen and Maher, but I believe if they started now people would hate them, especially Whalen!

Looks (sounds) like a solid choice! Sigh of relief hearing that sample. He's definitely not grating, monotone or unenaged sounding so checks the needed boxes for me.
Millen for colour would be most ideal.

I don't care if it's homerish. Maher and Mike Rogers was the best call team in history!!

I don't mind Wills. I don't love him refering to the Power Play as "the PP", but that's just me.
Aside from that I think he's a bit busy towing the company line(especially when he's a guest on 960). Making excuses for certain players, glossing over certain issues with the team, trying very hard not to throw players under the bus. Also, I'd catch myself tuning him out a bit while listening to a game at the gym for example.
I don't mind Wills, and I think he can get better, but Rick Ball definitely amplified my investment in/enjoyment of a game more.

The worst thing I can think of to say about Derek Wills is that his positivity is disruptive when I want to be in a bad mood.

Tough to gauge his quality based on a few clips but his voice doesn’t sound overly annoying to me so I’m on board with it.
