Hopefully the bumrape the businesses in Marda are rewarded with a decent looking result after all this time.
When is that expected to be done? I will definitely add at least 6 months to that day.
Also when is the 17th Avenue South abortion project expected to be done?

An absolutely stunning addition to the corner of 17th Ave and 4th Street IMO, and a massive urban statement on that corner. The tallest tower will be 46 stories! Love this

(I will admit that many of the original buildings in Marda were pretty nasty, but still, nothing makes a neighbourhood more people friendly than a corridor of glass buildings overlooked by towers.)

I generally agree in the sense that I really hate the idea of removing smaller, truly local business in older Inglewood buildings in an attempt to just line 9th with sterile mid-rise boxes.
That said, this is a pretty bleh corner of 17th and was definitely a “break” between more bustling areas, so it’s ripe for re-development. It’s replacing a kind of crappy part of the block and, if it can nail the retail/restaurant piece, will actually improve the flow of the area and, of course, add housing options.
There definitely needs to be a balance but I think (for now) this still maintains that balance.

So my buddy says to me he says, "hey man, want to meet me to grab something to drink at Stonyslope Brewing Company?"
Now...I'm not a huge craft brew kind of guy and I'd never heard of this place, but I figure, its a Sunday afternoon, what the hell right?
It was a setup.
Its in Haysboro. I lived in the Boro for a few years and worked there for 10. The Stonyslope Brewing Company is literally my old office.
I had 3 different offices in my 10 years in that building, Stonyslope is 2 of them and my longest tenured office is now a Weed/Record store.
Credit to them, they've all done amazing work and...they let me wander the building with a beer just checking out old memories and all their changes!
So. If you like craft brew and...I'll be honest, insanely good bread, check out Stonyslope Brewing in Haysboro.
9620 Elbow Dr SW #20.
I cant speak to the weed shop, but I'm sure they're good too. The girl behind the counter was incredibly kind and accommodating!
I remember them asking: "So...what do you think?"
To which I replied: "I hated this place and everyone in it and I wouldnt have pissed on it if it was on fire. What you people have done with it? Its much better, I like it and you should be proud of your work!"
So...if you're in the Boro stop by and support a local Brewery and....weed place?
Nothing against them at all I just dont smoke weed so I dont know.

Unfortunately a lot of the quirky stuff that makes Inglewood Inglewood is slowly disappearing. Blues Can is being redeveloped, the Ol'Beautiful building fire, Fair's Fair Bookstore is slated for re-development at some point...
I'm sure a lot of it will be replaced with shiny new condos and/or retail, but it's never quite the same.

I agree
17th has almost no highrises along it. It's full of 1-4 story buildings with apartment blocks built behind it. I do hope highrises don't end up cannabolizing the streetscape thats been built on it.

Further down in the article it mentions a former employee has purchased the name and a lot of the iconic decorative items and is opening up a new Crown Surplus in Drumheller, so it's not dead-dead at least.

You go to any great city in the world, and the most loved neighborhoods are almost always ones with 1-4 story buildings, with quality materials and and a certain character. Places like 17th (or the old stretch of Inglewood) work because the buildings are typically human-scaled, and tend to use warmer and natural materials like brick or stone.
Skyscrapers on the other hand make for great skylines and add density on paper...but can be pretty cold and imposing when up close. There are always exceptions and they have their place, but in general, I don't really think they make for great neighborhoods.

I can't speak for your Asian city examples, but I used to live in NY and the places where people wanted to live/eat/shop in (Village, Soho, East Village/Alphabet, Williamsburg, Union Square etc) were all the relatively low/mid rise neighborhoods. The Financial District and Midtown has all the famous towers...but they weren't the desirable neighborhoods for citizens....most of those areas are relatively dead outside of work and have cheaper rent. It's true of other American cities too...the action may still be inner-city, but typically not where the skyscrapers are.
You go to London, or Paris, or Frankfurt, or whatever city in Europe, and just look at the districts where the skyscrapers are. Nice architecture and fine places to work, but few actually want to live and hang out in those areas outside of office hours. People don't go to Paris to hang out in La Defense. Many European cities also have blocks and blocks of tall residential towers, but most of them feel just as cold as any cookie-cutter suburb. The beauty and life is always in the older/smaller character neighborhoods.
Skyscrapers/condo towers have their place...but you couldn't pay me enough to live in a place like Mississauga. Low/Midrise density is where it's at!
