Draisaitl - $8.5
J.Skinner - $3.0
Perry - $1.15
C.Brown - $1.0
Ryan - $0.9
Bouchard - $3.9
Emberson - $0.95
Neal - $1.91
They want to keep Draisaitl and Bouchard and they have $21.31M to give those two and replace the leaving players. Maybe Drai settles down for $12.5M... is that a discount? ... That leaves $8.81 for Bouchard... is that even enough for Bouchard? How much will the cap go up? Not enough to pay Drai, Bouch and replace the outbound players.
Draisaitl's agent would be very dumb to not realize and inform him that he won't get the money he wants from Edmonton with the team being competitive. He can take a discount and stay and lose or he can go somewhere else, get his pay day and probably be in a better situation.
Draisaitl is gone. Edmonton is done. McDavid will follow right after that. Edmonton's situation can best be described the same way we describe their team and city. No Good.

Exactly. If he wants to be on a competitive team for the future he should go to a team on the upswing that still has cap flexibility going forward. That’s not to say he should go to a team in full rebuild but there are teams out there that aren’t in the “capped out and aged out” phase of their competitive window like the oilers are. The oilers are already the oldest team in the league and don’t have the prospects or picks to have a second wave of affordable young complimentary players come in. They will keep getting older and keep being capped out - even more so if he and McDavid were to re-sign.
LA is a good example. They are competitive. The Doughty and Kopitar contracts don’t have much left on them and I could see both of them taking short term deals at lower cap hits to finish off their career in LA. They have a good prospect pool. Their younger players are developing into taking over the larger roles from their veteran players. All this points to a team that can afford to bring in Draisaitl and keep getting better. Added bonus that you get to live in Southern California instead of Edmonton.

Seeing a 'hockey thoughts' type article on the Hockey News today saying the Oilers need to add a 'top 4' defenseman before the 2025 trade deadline. No kidding sherlock. And then they go on to name several mid-level names (including ex-oilers like larssen and Petry). With what money?
And could you imagine the despair of finding out you are going to be an oiler for the second time?

Even with Brown’s and Perry’s bonuses coming off and the cap going up 5% they are still screwed. Campbell is lucky enough to get a raise to not play there next year. Not to mention the next great shut down defender, Ty Emberson, will need a new contract too.
Maybe they are lucky and find someone to take on Kane. They might have 10 mil to sign 6-7 guys.
They aren’t going to get better, only older.

Reminder - Draisaitl's agent said they ahd to sign by the end of this month or there'd be no negotiations until the end of the season - I hope it wasn't a bluff.

I'm mostly convinced they've put that out there so they can defer any real negotiations to next summer and align with McDavid's plans.

Man, it's gonna be fun watching the Oilers crash and burn this year. It's annoying how their entitled media and fans just assume they're gonna march right back to the finals again, like it's somehow easy to do. Bunch o' clowns, the lot of them.

It's even better than that if I remember correctly, he said if it wasn't done by the end of August it wasn't getting done there.

UFA Update: #Oilers are perusing the market for right-shot D, including Justin Schultz, Tyson Barrie and Kevin Shattenkirk, among others.
Also, Max Pacioretty has firm offers in-hand from at least three teams, the veteran forward expected to make a decision soon.

Too bad for them Codi Ceci is still under contract with the Sharks for one more year. He's right-shot. Can play top 4 minutes. Not a spectacular player, but only making $3.25M which is peanuts compared to Nurse on the other side.

Leaving aside the obvious reasons why he should not be back in the league, Bowman is simply not a great GM. Holland at least seemed to be making some reasonable moves that did improve their team. He's not the greatest GM but at least he tended to move the needle forward for the Oilers on the whole. Bowman was very confusing at the end of his tenure with Chicago and the start of his tenure with the Oilers has a lot of the same issues.
Why on earth trade Ceci if you are not going to match the off-sheets and then proceed to see if you can get a right-shot defenceman?

When McDavid is the youngest forward on the team (until they gift Savoie a spot) and they have very few picks and prospects I just don’t really see the path to long term contention once those guys sign their extensions. Looks at the Hawks and Pens once those guys got in their early 30’s. A lot of people talking like these contracts are formalities but if I was an Oilers fan I would be nervous these guys are going to see the future and decide to leave

That's what he said but time will tell if this is just agent speak. That said if he negotiates with the Oilers post-August then that weakens him from a bargaining perspective as teams will just assume he's full of hot air next time he draws a line in the sand.

Yeah, it pretty much has to be an old worn down McDrai, Nurse, Bouchard, Nothing-happens and a pile of league min PTOs for several years.

It is most likely a pressure tactic on the Oilers. I doubt the negotiate during the season, but it would also be foolish for Pissy to get that close to freedom and just sign.
Even if the Oilers offer him 15M, he will get that on the market just with a year less.

On the Oilers subreddit they are calling for Emberson to win the Norris. I simply can’t believe the degree of delusion. I can’t wait until Drai leaves.

Going to be better when he stays at 15 million a year and is already breaking down.

And then McDavid leaves and Drai has to play against the opposing teams top pairing with no support.
But Drai already knows this so will bolt.
