For those asking about the NE corner:

Quote:
A 0.18 hectare (0.44 acre) site has been reserved at the northeast corner of the Calgary Event Centre Block for future development. CSEC has reserved the site as an option for future development, independent of the surrounding block programming. The future development site presents a unique opportunity to explore its best use to the benefit of Calgarians and visitors alike following the opening of the Calgary Event Centre Block.

As part of the design process, the project team has explored and tested a variety of use options and building configurations for the site, including a hotel and/or office that would integrate seamlessly with the Calgary Event Centre Block design.
So sounds like they have building exteriors already designed to go there if they decide to pursue development.

So the community arena/practice facility is underground? That's pretty cool

I am also interested in what they do with those outdoor "play areas"

It is a good way to open up more plaza space to get those Play areas.

I believe the idea is that it's cheaper to build and operate if both ice surfaces are on the same level. The lower bowl is below grade, so that puts the actual rinks pretty deep.

Makes it easier for a zamboni to go between rinks too and it probably makes the ice plant work more efficiently. Major league players can connect straight down a hall from their main dressing room instead of going up to main level.

I believe that in the video shown on groundbreaking day one of the images showed a hotel in that corner.

Lol what an underwhelming video. Got rid of a parking lot and pushed some dirt around -- queue the inspirational music and timelapse, pats on the back for everyone!
