I would have matched Holloway for $2.3 million, forgoing the third in compensation. I didn't consider the second 3rd as we have never seen the offer sheeting team give up additional assets beyond the compensation. That is a new wrinkle I don't think anyone expected.

Just on the last part, I read an athletic article today (sorry no link) that Bowman asked for the player and draft pick to guarantee the Oilers wouldn’t match. Oilers knew that they weren’t going to match, but obviously put enough frighteners on the blues to get the extras. They aren’t a lot, and had to be negotiated, but it makes the deal “visually better”. Who knows if it will actually make a difference.
I noticed that spector claimed that it created maximum flexibility, but it doesn’t even fit the definition of flexibility or maximum, never mind combined in a phrase.

I’m surprised the “media” hasn’t gone all the way on this, claiming that this was all Bowman’s idea from the start and the reason he got hired in the first place. Absolute genius work campaigning the league to get a team to take these scrubs off his hands and open up so much cap space and roster flexibility for the Oilers. Just brilliant of him to think of this and convince St.Louis to sign these duds.

John Matheson is getting roasted now as well.
Henrique took discount to win cup. Someone points out he’s made 59M. Fine Janmark has taken discounts his whole career. Again pointed out he’s a 3rd round pick he’s and a 3rd liner.
This old fart should take a discount at his place of employment for the betterment of the company.

Also matching these deals would be showing bad faith to Connor, Leon and Evan who have all agreed to take discounts to chase cups.

Those must be the discounts on the last contracts since no new ones have been signed recently.
Everyone knows of course that the “savings” will be given to these 3.
I bet everyone on the Oilers wishes that nurse had asked for less on his contract “for conna”.

The Oilers got their discount on the last contracts for Drai and Conna, if anyone thinks that they're going to do two in a row for the Oilers, especially looking at the suspect future of that team is seriously delusional.
These contracts represent their probably last big money contracts for both players. They're going to get the most money possible.
If Drai doesn't sign by the end of the month, I don't doubt that the Oilers will explore trading him before the deadline.

Did you know that countless veterans are tripping over themselves to win cup s with the Oilers? Why wouldn’t those superstars take massive pay cuts to win cup s in Edmonton?

Exactly. Both players will be going max term, max dollar as they know they have maybe 3 seriously high level seasons left at the most to cash in, and that's if they stay healthy (both have a ton of wear and tear on their bodies from being overused to the extreme). This is the problem with not moving Drysaddle now to get younger and deeper.
The Oilers are going to be saddled with a cap nightmare for a decade, and if they don't actually win a cup in the next 3 seasons, will likely be uncompetitive as they have 2 flawed D and two really good forwards all being paid like superstars for 4-5 seasons.

Most of the quality for quantity trades (which is the only way they could trade Drai now) don't work out that well - usually the team getting the best player wins.

Oilers screwed themselves by wasting the years where they had Draisaitl and McDavid at below market value. I can't see either giving up anymore money to "win" with the Oilers, when there are plenty of contenders out there just as poised to win the cup as the Oilers.
Only way Oilers will be able to extend them is 8 years x market value. If Draisaitl signs for anything less than $14M per, he's left money on the table.

Right McDufus & Pissy are going to take another discount Not.
The Oilers are going to have to pay Both a minimum of 15 million million but most likely it be 20 million a year.
I will say this only way Connor takes a discount it be a 1 or 2 year deal to truly see if they could do it again and if they don't he will leave for the home town team .

Yeah can't see Mcdavid or Drai taking discounts anymore. They already did and the management did nothing but give that money to garbage players or misfits and squandered eight years of their careers.

I don't think either guy took a discount in the first place...Drai just happened to improve during the contract, when he signed it there was talk that it was too much too soon.
Oilers fanboy media leaked inflated contracts for McDavid and the hero signed for slightly less. He was still the highest paid player in the league for most of the deal.
Drai seeing Broberg make over half of what he makes next season should open his eyes a bit.

Ya this whole "why would you leave a contender" talk makes no sense. If I'm Draisaitl I'm looking at Boston and saying they're a contender WITHOUT me, imagine if I'm there

"2 goals away from the cup!"
but no mention of "2 goals away from losing to a 3rd stringer in round 2"

Draisatl seeing what nurse makes should open his eyes!
Also, didn’t nurse punch Draisatl over nurse’s sister at some point? These things tend to linger…

I could see am active team like Fla making some moves around Bennett, Verhaege, Knight in order to fit Draisaitl in. Ditto NYR.

Jeff Skinner signed for $3M after making $100M.
He’s got three straight 20 goal seasons and his last two were 30+.
Henrique is on a 2-year $6M deal - a 33 year old centre with 51 points last year gets more than that on the open market.
Arvidsson on a 2-year is a legit bounce back candidate, and $4M is not a bad number for him at all.
So it’s happened at least three times this off season alone.
It won’t be every player, but clearly there will always be quality veteran players who will take less after making their money to chase glory.

Still can't believe how badly Edmonton fumbled this situation and lost their two best prospects for hardly anything.
Thank you, Jackson and Bowman!!!
