I think this is a good trade for MTL. Even on a garbage CLB team, Laine was a PPG player in 21-22 and 22-23. If he can replicate that, then the Habs could either keep him (depending on their cycle) or trade him with retention for a draft pick and/or prospects to a contender looking for scoring help.

Steal for the Habs. They get a second rounder as a bonus to take a chance on a talented guy.

I don't see this as a steal. Laine gets his points but generally gets caved 5v5. Habs now have $9 million tied up over the next two seasons on a guy that IMO has a neutral effect on the outcomes of games. Plus he misses tonnes of games as well.

The guy is talented but he isn't effective.

They can trade him retained (or double retained) at the deadline and get even more picks. Assuming he produces.

Love to see what Marty will do with Laine.....the guy gets allot of deserved respect from his players . Not a Habs fan but a fan of Martin StLouis . Always will be the guy Calgary F Ed up on in letting him go because he was too small.... incredible player and person and now IMO
An underrated coach.

Worthwhile gamble for the Habs. Hopefully helps them finish higher than the Flames.

Two years Montreal takes a chance on. Minor detail. He's no Nurse. He's no Huberdeau either.

Habs can’t score past their first line. This guy can do that. St Louis has a knack for communicating with his players. Laine also seems genuinely interested in playing there, too. Maybe he’ll thrive under a big spotlight. Looking forward to seeing what happens.

This is pretty old analysis. Laine played center for Columbus, he isn't anywhere close to being bad defensively anymore. It's just that nobody watches Columbus and playing on a bad team doesn't help the stats department. This guy is a stud if he can stay healthy.

He played center last season but he didn't do it particularly well.

Well no ####, he's a winger. It's abysmal that they even tried to make him one as a 25 year old.

Wait, weren't you just saying he's not bad defensively because he can play centre?

You’ve watched how many games? He’s teaching young players to play a 200 foot game. Stick to ####ty takes on the Flames.

He can, that doesn't make him a center? He's much better at the wing and the desperation that was going on in Columbus tried to make him. He isn't as bad defensively as the narrative says. Following?

Can we put this incorrect narrative to rest already? It comes up every time and it is simply not true.

He wasn't some superstar in waiting that Calgary just said see-ya to. By his own account, he didn't make the most of any of his opportunities, and that Calgary cutting him made him realize he had to do much much better and that he had to work hard and improve immensely if he wanted to have any sort of career in the NHL at all. He went unclaimed in the waiver draft he was exposed to. And he only went to Tampa because they were an expansion team and figured he had a better chance of sticking there.

Now, to be fair, he obviously did just that, but it took yet another humiliating cut for him to realize that his own attitude was part of the problem, and took a last chance with a team that really didn't have much to offer as far as competition to get him to improve his own mindset and game.

Call it having a chip on his shoulder, bottoming out, whatever. But at least half the blame for the Flames cutting him rests with St. Louis himself.

People nowadays say the same thing about Matthew Philips. Can he figure it out and be successful at the NHL level? Maybe. But he's running out of chances like St. Louis did back in the day. Happens to lots of players, even ones successful at the AHL level.

Very few of them turn it around completely and save their career like St. Louis.

Where are the Habs at in their rebuild cycle?
I don't watch them much so curious your perspective.

To me, this move looks like low risk but kicking the can down the road 2 years.
I don't see a competitive roster in Montreal or a team close to taking the next step and not sure how Laine really helps that.

So he's tried and largely failed at playing centre for a team that is really bad defensively as a whole. I don't see how that is evidence that he is any good defensively.

Maybe watch him Considering he's never played center before he has done an excellent job. Cheers.

Well, I can't watch him play centre for Columbus now, can I? So what you're really saying is, ‘Believe everything I say because I watched him and I think my personal eye test is worth more than stats.’
