I don't know how I feel about this. It is one of those dammed of you do and dammed if you don't situations. If they had matched they would be way over the cap and need to work lots of magic. They didn't match so lose their 2 best prospects. I kinda wish they lost both prospects and still been way over the cap.

Oh well either way the Oilers suck

Not the worst ever but I feel like they came out of it short at least a 3rd round pick. Probably a 2nd.

Hate to say the oilers did something right but they walked away from bad contracts here. I thought previously they matched the offer but they didn’t. They’re in cap hell. Sucks that they lost two prospects but neither guy is someone you pay this cash for.

Losing Broberg is huge, I am not convinced Holloway has much potential other than a bottom 6 grinder. Broberg actually looked to be coming along as a top 4 and losing that is massive. This is a horrible outcome for the Oilers

God I hope the Oilers have a season like the Flames did in 2022-23.

All I see on Twitter is whining about how how could Broberg and Holloway leave a "Perennial Cup Contender" for a non-playoff team.

I suppose $4.5 for two years isn’t breaking the bank but right now I don’t see him worth it. Especially on a capped out team. It’s more of an indictment on that cost for what you’re getting.

I love your 'Rigged' avatar.

I think its important to remember however that until the Oilers got every break in the book they were the worst team in the NHL.

Yeah, they made it to the Cup Finals on the NHL's 'Yellow Brick Road' but if the stars dont align for them again? Prepare for Darkness.

Was a tweet stating that Broberg was only eligible to be offer sheeted on account of having played at least 80 NHL games and they snuck him in the last two of the season putting him at 81. Thus creating their own delicious weather. No clue if that statement was true or not.

Yeah people forget this was a team at the bottom of the standings. It took some historic winning streaks for them to get back into the playoff picture, and pacific is weak.

This team can easily be fighting for a wild card spot and miss out with that defence. Might be the worst in the league. They have a waiver claim and some guy who gets passed around every deadline now in their top 4. Should be interesting.

It's a true statement according to the NHL's rules on which players can be offer-sheeted. One of the rules is that only forwards and d-men (with 3 years of service or more) who have played at least 80 games are eligible for an offer sheet.

So yes, the Oilers screwed themselves by playing him in 2 meaningless games at the end of the year and putting him at 81 games played, making him eligible for an offer sheet.

Yeah, I'd just love it if they had a season where nothing went right and they couldn't rely on a long fluke winning streak to get back in. Then their delusional fanbase and media would be left wondering what happened to the amazing Oilers.

Listening to Seravalli carrying water on the greatness of Emberson on Flames Talk. The guy must be on the payroll for Katz and company.

Didn’t we see the oilers be terrible for like over a decade. Yet, every summer we heard how the amazing oilers were coming. That team is better than the present team without McDavid or Drysaitl. If those two leave, that franchise is going to be hurting for a long time.

I heard it was since deleted because it's not games played but games on the roster. I can't seem to confirm if that's right or not. Only thing I can find is a minimum of 80 games played for forwards or defenceman with three seasons.

Searching around I came across this. For a player who has 3 pro seasons this does seem to make sense...

A player needs 3 professional season to be eligible to Group 2 RFA. A professional season is 10 pro games when the player is 20 years old or older.

Broberg played 59 pro games in 2021-2022, 62 pro games in 2022-2023 and 73 pro games in 2023-2024.

Quite the oversight from Edmonton management if true.

The most impressive part was about Emberson having played more NHL games than Broberg. emberson could step right in, was a good dman on a bad team.
